We, concerned Kenyan citizens wish to express our shock and disgust at the recent move by the Members of Parliament of the Kenyan Legislative Assembly (Parliament) to award themselves very high bonuses just for being Members of Parliament for 5 years and against the prevailing economic circumstances in the country. As you have realised, the country (Kenya) is going through very hard economic times calling for more belt-tightening moves. Apart from that, the MPs are already OVER-PAID and underworked unlike other public servants like Nurses, Doctors, Teachers and Policemen. The country doesn’t have enough health, educational, security and other basic social facilities to cater for our daily needs. The few existing ones are not well equipped and the staff working in the facilities poorly rewarded. Only the privileged few who are doing alot of nothing are the ones who are so much over- paid. Our security sector needs equipment apart from the yet to start reforms. Our policemen and women are some of the poorly paid civil servants. It is wrong for just over 220 individuals to decide to award themselves Ksh 2 billion in bonuses while they are just some of the best paid Kenyans. Someone told me that if you really want to be rich, you need not look at the civil service as where to get all your wealth in such a short time. How do you explain a situation where some 220 over paid individuals get to award themselves Ksh 9.3 million each after working for only 4 years. Who gets such amount of reward after such a short time? Being a representative of the people is a calling and not supposed to be a reason to exploit the country dry. As MPs, what you have done is RAPE a very emaciated cow. You are such a group of heartless fellows. To this end, we BEG the President of the Republic of Kenya, Hon Mwai Kibaki, to KINDLY not sign this bill and return it back to parliament for appropriate amendment. Mr President we believe that you can save save Kenyans from this inhuman abuse. Key legal institutions including Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC), Salaries and Remunerations Commission among others have all protested at the move by the MPs and term it “illegal”. If you have a heart Mr President, STOP this. If you go ahead and sign this bill, you will have legalised the blatant abuse of the poor and dying Kenyans. We call on Kenyans to mark all the MPs who voted themselves such huge awards and not allow them back to parliament.
