We, as students, aim to preserve the University of Oregon as a public institution that is accountable to elected officials and the citizens of Oregon. We want to promote more student control over tuition setting. We oppose the New Partnership, SB 559, that would create a local governing board that would decrease state oversight over our tuition dollars. Other schools around the country have broken away from the legislative process, and have seen tuition skyrocket with the absence of state oversight. We want our university to be affordable and accessible to all Oregon students for years to come. The New Partnership also proposes transforming our Department of Public Safety into a fully armed police force. Students oppose this because it will inflate DPS’s budget at a time when students are already struggling to cover the cost of ever-increasing tuition. Weapons will not make our campus safer. We believe that DPS should invest in services that proactively benefit us, rather than simply increasing their citation and arming authority. We also oppose Senate bills 405 and 116 which would allow all Oregon universities to create a police force on their campus.
