Don't let them get you down - keep pushing for common sense and exceptions over the bland application and enforcement of rules and regulations. Go on- make a difference out there! Name: Darren Moloney on Sep 27, 2007Comments: Local councillors are in my opinion a complete waste of space and money ran by interfering do gooders who couldn't get on in the real world the rest of us live in. I'd rather see a young lad being pro-active in life than sat around town harrassing locals. But then the council prefer to "save" people from themselves - a clear sign of the Nanny State we live in. Good for you Steve, tell SDC to go stick it!!!Flag

Name: Nick Roper on Sep 27, 2007Comments: We should be encouraging youngsters like Steve rather than stifling their enthusiasm. I know for a fact that Steve actually puts a lot of hard work not only into his own ambitions to be self-supporting, but also into contributing to community projects as well. I would agree that more properly managed and responsibly operated facilities for young people would be great.Flag

Name: Mike Belch on Sep 27, 2007Comments: Steve is an example to others of his age and his entrepreneurial spirit should be encouraged not be stifled by petty bureaucracy. Last week I mentioned his sign to a PCSO in the village who expressed the exact same opinion. If the Parish Council and Sedgemoor want to act to make Cheddar a better place they should do something about the drug dealing and consumption which takes place around the public toilets on Station Road, or they should divert their attention to getting better recreational facilities for young people - such as a skate park.Flag

Name: Christopher Inge on Sep 27, 2007Comments: This would and should have been an opportunity for bureaucracy to show it has a human face. The relevant officer and portfolio holder must now save their blushes by meeting Steve on-site and finding a way to accommodate his legitimate business aspirations. Instead of kicking him in the teeth, Sedgemoor should be giving him a grant and promoting his business as a case study of public sector acumen.Flag

Name: Nigel Cook on Sep 27, 2007Comments: I agree with all the points above. Bureaucracy with the associated stupidity it seems to engender is stifling our society. People on councils should be taking a lead in promoting and supporting young people who are contributing to their communities, it might help set an example for those who aren't!Flag

Name: Andrew Stinchcomb on Sep 27, 2007Comments: Lets encourage entrepeneurship in young people. This is a constructive and productive way of investing his time. He is causing absolutely no harm or nuisance to anyone, on the contrary, he is providing a service, using his initiative and doing so in a manner which is not intrusive to anybody.Flag

Name: Simon Kearsley on Sep 27, 2007Comments: This is wrong. It's almost an abuse of power in the way that it is using the planning process in a way that was never intended at the outset. Rather than simply banning things why not work WITH Steve to iron out any problems and encourage more people to do the same tjhingFlag

Surely Cheddar has much more important things to worry about...Meanwhile lets encourage our youngsters to do something useful in their spare time, and at the same time allocate some money to provide a loacl facility that they can all use and enjoy.Flag

Name: Jem Ham on Sep 28, 2007Comments: I couldnt agree more, give the lad a break. It was alright for some dirty layabouts to occupy the layby for weeks on end creating a filthy mess but when a young lad has a bright idea and tries to sell the horse manure he is made to take down his sign. As for the bike ramps, if the kids of Cheddar were given somewhere to play they wouldnt need to erect their own facilities. So come on Sedgemoor, whoever is responsible for making these ridiculous decisions, get off your fat arses and get a life. Unfortunately im afraid that whoever it is will as usual hide behind the collective organisation and that these pathetically weak sort of decisions will continue to annoy common, decent folk.Flag

Name: Steven McCarthy on Sep 28, 2007Comments: Asking Steven to remove a sign which is a clear sign of original and resourceful use of his time just because someone compained about it sems to me to be a crass waste of time and money. Why is our local council so determined to stop one teenager fron using his time in the positive and useful creation of wealth I hope that you will reconsider and in future aim to use our money more effectively and especially in the provision of constructive recreational resources and sites.Flag
