We are parents, community members and friends of a student at Kaiser Elementary school in Oakland and we are very concerned about the recent information regarding potential school closures. There has been a lack of communication from OSUD regarding the public meetings to discuss the Optimum School Size and Results Based Budgeting Plan. This informion should habe been widley advertised The interests of the families and the children of the schools are not well represented by having only OUSD administrative staff make strategy decisions that affect our children. There needs to be more transparency and just good and rigorous communication with parents about the decisions and polices that affect our children. Why were no parents or community members involved in the process of determining the criteria that affect the welfare of our children There are no parents or School Board members on the Districts' Strategy Group. We are unconvinced that our interests are well represented by having only OUSD administrative staff make strategy decisions that affect our children. It seems not nearly representative enough of the wide and important viewpoints that need to be considered in strategic decisions for our schools. The community that is Kaiser Elementary School is absolutely dedicated to the high quality educational experience that our children receive there and we would not entertain even the slightest hint that Kaiser might end up on a list of small schools to be closed. Our principal, teachers and staff are amongst the best and are an excellent example of what quality and loving care can do for a small school community. Our parents are tireless in their efforts to support them, and each other, and most of all, their children. It is this community spirit, this dedication to the creation and support of excellence and constant work to make it so that makes Kaiser a model for other elementary schools. We hope to hear how the Oakland Unified District is going to support Kaiser in our efforts and not hear how we may be on a list of small schools set for possible closure. This is patently unacceptable and we will not sit still for such a possibility and we demand that Kaiser Elementary remain open.
