Name: Alison Thomas on Aug 28, 2008Comments: I am currently working for the UNHCR in Pakistan. It is next to impossible to find international work without the experience that the IYIP program provides a recent graduate. This transitional program is absolutely necessary to develop young professionals willing and able to work in an international context. Alison ThomasFlag

Name: Kaitlin Dearham on Aug 29, 2008Comments: There are so few resources for young Canadians who want to work in development/foreign aid, particularly since other youth programs have already been cut during the current administration. I really have to question whether the government sees international development, or youth employment, as a priority. Without the CIDA youth internship program, it will be very difficult for me to find a placement after graduation, since I do not have the financial means to support myself through unfunded internships.Flag

It's not just about money. it the process of branding Canada as a good country, and make young Canadians to know other side of the world. It definately brings positive force to the Canadian community.Flag

Through this program, I am gaining skills in international development that I would otherwise not have exposure to in a professional environment. I sincerely hope that young Canadians in the decades to come will be able to have the opportunities I have had to begin my career.Flag

Name: Catherine Fleming on Aug 31, 2008Comments: This programme provides a valuable opportunity for Canadian youth to get some international work experience. Without it, many may study international subjects, but not be able to get a job in that field. Cutting this inexpensive programme sends the message that we do not believe in the potential of young Canadians to contribute globally.Flag

Name: Brian O'Neill on Sep 1, 2008Comments: I am convinced that the IYIP program benefits not only the interns themselves, but also the host organizations and communities in overseas countries. I have witnessed both sides of the program. As to the suggestion that the government might be considering applying the program to retirees rather than students, or post-students, I would like to make one point very strongly. As a 61-year-old man -- arguably quite fit and adaptable for my age -- who recently spent some time 'roughing it' in Guatemala, I would suggest that there are very few Canadians my age who would be willing to endure the difficult living circumstances experienced by the current crop of youthful internees when living overseas. A similar program for retirees would cost considerably more for accommodation and living expenses.Flag

The program is a small but important part of Canadian development assistance, and should be maintained.Flag

Name: Sophia Horwitz on Sep 1, 2008Comments: Upon just returning from a CIDA Youth Employment Strategy internship and gaining invaluable experience with progressive and hardworking individuals abroad I am distressed that future young canadians might be denied this opportunity and that host organizations abroad who have come to expect some support and solidarity would be let down.Flag

Name: Fraser Turner on Sep 1, 2008Comments: This is a program that provides invaluable life experience for those youth sent on these internships. By providing opportunities through IYIP, CIDA is actively promoting a broad and inclusive worldview for young Canadians, something that in my opinion is essential in this age of globalization.Flag

Name: Vic Hill on Sep 1, 2008Comments: This internship program changed my life. I gained invaluable experience both personally and professionally because of my participation in this program. My participation in this program has built my self- confidence, changed my worldview, and led me to develop skills related to working cross culturally, writing proposals and building community. To cancel this program would be a tremendous loss not only to our recent graduates but also to the international community that we have worked with in the past and recent future. I sincerely hope that this program will continue.Flag
