# NameComments
AnonymousPlease respect Portland's history. Renaming streets is a waste of time and money. Also, why stop at that? We can just rename them every year or so for whatever politcal reason, won't that be fun! Listen to the people. Don't do it.
Constance Cunnington
Irene JensenPlease stop spending our tax dollars on things not needed right now. Cesar Chaves can be a name used in new area's rather than costing the City money. There is a street in Woodburn by that name and his family should be proud.
Matt EckertNo way, stop renaming historical streets! Name a new street after him if you want, not Interstate!
casandra washingtonPut it in dowtown Lake Oswego! (Yeah Right!)

Mary Anne SanfordC Chavez has little to do with Portland or this area of Portland. Why not revert i to the historical name of Patton Avenue, which it was named prior to 1920 (or so) .. Patton was an early settler and established the patton house (near going) which his name still lives, as well as patton park near killingsworth. But it took me years to find out who this person was after I found the name on old curb ends along interstate avenue. Chavez no - leave it the way it is.
Phoebe SanfordLeave it as it is.
AnonymousDO NOT rename Interstate Avenue

James WolleckHow is renaming Interstate honoring Cesar Chavez? Most people don't even know who he is. Name a park or community center or start a scholarship to honor him and educate everyone on what his cause was, what he fought for. Naming a street does not honor him. Like renaming Portland Blvd to Rosa Parks way was supposed to honor her. Its does not. No one even knows who she is. The money that it will take to rename the street would be better spent cleaning up the street, like the landscaping that is dying and is full of weeds. Helping the business on the street clean up their store fronts. I am tired of the City council automatically signing off on things like this. Its a feel good item on their daily agenda. I have nothing against Caesar Chavez but renaming Interstate Ave is not doing justice to his name. Thank you.

James WolleckI think the money that will be invested in renaming Interstate Ave would be better spent in cleaing up the street, i.e. pulling weeds, replanting and maintaing the landscape. Helping business with store fronts, promoting their business to the neighborhood. Renaming the street is not going to help promote the memory of Cesar Chavez or what he did for people. The group that is for renaming should start a scholarship in his name, set up memorial that explains who he was and what he did and why he is important. Name a street after him does none of this. No one knows who he is! Just like Rosa Parks way. This is a dishonor to her because the street does not go anywhere except North Portland. The rest of the city probably does not know that Portland Blvd does not exist anymore. Most people probably think its Rose Parkway. Renaming streets seems to be an easy way for the City to honor people. I can possibly see a Citizen of the city being honored, likeBill Naito is with Naito Parkway but Rosa Parks, and Cesar Chavez did nothing directly for Portland. They should be honored but renaming a street is not the way. If you must rename a street do it in Southwest Portland. I want to see the citizens of that area of town deal with something like this. Rename Broadway. It goes thru NE N NW and SW. That would creat quite a stir and conversation.
AnonymousI am opposed to the name change. The name change should be done in another part of the city to reinforce the devotion of the city to diversity.
Kim AdamsI have nothing against renaming a street, but feel that the renaming of Interstate avenue will create havoc and headache for many of the businesses in the area.
Susan FreedPlease name a park or "new" street after this brave man but please do not rename Interstate Ave.
dave schleigerKeep history as it is, and build a new road for Chavez
Beth MartinI believe there are more appropriate ways to honor Chavez. A farmers market or some venue that has something to do with his politics.

tom peilStill frustrated with Rosa Parks change. Portland Blvd has been a staple to the community and multi cultural community, to take a city name and to change it to a singular culture is a mistake. To take Interstate and change it to a singular cultural icon again is a mistake. I dont care if you change a Lincoln or Jefferson and switch it, but leave our long time street names ALONE! There is nothing wrong with Interstate and there was nothing wrong with Portland Blvd either.....
AnonymousI don't think the name should be changed. It causes grief and $$$ for all people that live or work on the street. Changing your address on all of your contacts, having to have new business cards, letterheads, billings and promotions all reprinted. I agree that mr Chavez should be honored, perhaps by a new street, or area. But changing a street name is detrimental to all.
Gregory FreedIt would be more appropriate to name a park or a new street after Mr. Chavez. The disruption and expense of changing a major business street's name is wasteful.
Judy PerrinEnough with the name changes in North Portland. If this name change is necessary, pick another part of town.
Lloyd WarnesRenaming streets is a hollow attempt to try to prove our diversity and/or honor prominent minorities. How about something prominent like renaming the Rose Garden, or the interstate bridge when it gets replaced?
RoyKeep true to the N. Portland roots and leave Interstate Ave. alone.
Lee PottsPlease alert all concerned that the Overlook Neighborhood Assoc will be voting on this matter at the Sept 18th meeting Kaiser Town Hall 7:00 pm We must win this vote prior to the city sponsored meetings

Arlene HolmesI am very unhappy with the name change of Portland Blvd. I plan to keep on calling it Portland Blvd indefinitely. If the neighbors surrounding Ptld Blvd had been given a chance to vote, we all know what the outcome would have been. This was an unwelcome change forced on us by the Albina Ministerial Alliance and Commissioner Saltzman. I am not in favor of the name change of Interstate Avenue. Some suggestions which I have heard, which make sense to me are: change a numbered street in SE Portland. No one has any attachment to numbers. We do not have a John Kennedy Blvd, nor Einstein, nor Ghandi. For those of us who are longtime residents of North Portland, C. Chavez does not have a link with us. Just the cost alone is a ridiculous waste of money; we cannot afford health care for our children, or housing for the homeless, but we CAN afforde $10,000 to change a street name.
AnonymousI live in this neighborhood. City council follow the city code for street name changes and stop playing favorites. Rosa Parks was a mistake, especially because there is a school named for her. What about John Ball, who actually had a hand in how this city was formed, there is no longer anything celebrating this man. NO MORE!!!
M AllenI am all for naming a street to honor Cesar Chavez, but it seems odd that all the streets named after outstanding people of color are in N. Portland. Doesn't it feel a little contrived that we could drive down Cesar chavez, turn right on Rosa Parks Way and then right on MLK? Shouldn't we spread out these honors throughout the city, so others can benefit?

Mark DoughertyInterstate Avenue has historical significance that should be considered. My Grandparents used to come into Portland past "Paul Bunyan". Perhaps if we must change the name a better, more historically significant one to Portland could be considered.
AnonymousFocus on more important community issues rather than a street name. What a waste of time.
AnonymousThis is ridiculous. What political purpose would this serve? The Portland Blvd. debacle was bad enough.
Richard De WolfPlease follow procedure and make sure to play by the rules the city has outlined. The name change of Portland Blvd was inappropriately handled by the city.
KimWhy do we need to expend resources on this? Funds are so limited and we could put money into something more useful.

Jon SchneiderLet's find a way of honoring Chavez without negating another part of North Portland's history.
Amy Stoner
John ReinholdDo NOT rename Interstate. Keep Portland history local.
Lois McIntoshWhy don't you try doing this elsewhere, like NW 23rd, or Belmont, Powell etc. It's just because you think you can do anything to the people of North Portland and it doesn't matter.
