Chris KruellAs an Arbor Lodge resident since 1995, I agree with this position. Interstate Avenue has a storied history in our city and community and I'd prefer to maintain those ties while seeking another way to honor Cesar Chavez and the community that he represents.
Suzanne ObermireI live 1 block away from Interstate Avenue. I do not agree with the proposed name change. Interstate has historical significance and I vote to keep the name, as-s.

Louanne FlodingI have the utmost respect for the work of Mr Chavez, however, Interstate Avenue, as did Portland Blvd, has a long history of defining what North Portland is all about. PLEASE do not change the name of Interstate to ANY other name but what it has already been.
Sheila GrayPlease keep interstate avenue's name.
Mary Anne FlodingMy daughter is emailing my voice on this for me. Please do not change the name of Interstate Avenue. Let's find an alternative to honor C. Chavez
Kristine JohnstonThis is the neighborhood I grew up in. Interstate has been part of my growing up and part of the history I learned. Honor Mr. Chavez with something new, so that it may begin its OWN history.
AnonymousWhy not do something that REALLY honors Chavez instead of just naming a street after him?
christie hawkesLet he residents decide- don't speak for us. We vlaue our "hood" just the way it is.

AnonymousI am not interested in seeing the street be renamed to Ceasar chavez. I agree that it should be a new street name.
Doug Merritt
Jenna Mason-SteinbergInterstate is an important landmark in our neighborhood. Naming it after Chavez is misguided. Naming TV Hwy in Beaverton after Chavez would make sense...but, not a street that runs strictly through N Portland.
AnonymousPortland City Ordinance 17.93.020 Selection of Street to be Renamed. (previously "waived" when renaming Portland Blvd.) A. The name of the street proposed for renaming shall not be changed if the existing name is of historic significance, or the street is significant in its own right.

AnonymousEven though my last name is Ortiz, and I'm from the central coast of Calif., what the heck does C.C. have to do with Oregon? I live in the Arbor Lodge area and am vehemantly opposed to this idea. Why not change Denver ave? You know why? Because poloticians and "leaders" need a lagacy. Very dumb move. I once lived in Iowa. Maybe I'll petition the state to rename it Ortiz. If you change it, we should annex the state of Oregon and rename it Northern Califofrnia. You dislike us Californians so much, but your always trying to emulate us. Their going to rename it regardless of what we say. You know that don't you.
Kara JohnsonRe-naming a historically significant Avenue is not an appropriate way to memorialize Caesar E. Chavez. Why not pay tribute to Chavez by dedicating a (yet) unnamed park or green space in his memory, or perhaps a foundation or center for social change, resources for Mexican American workers or animal rights. Why not celebrate Chavez in a way that not only honors his memory, but also his legacy as a labor and animal rights activist? Does re-naming an Avenue (that already possesses its own legacy) elevate consciousness? I would argue, NO!
Anonymousleave it as interstate please.
Michael DownsDo NOT rename the street! Where is the public input? This seems short sighted!
Tiffany SavellNo!!!

Luanne AlomairWHY? Whre does it end? This has got to stop NOW!
AnonymousThe city needs to follow the proper process to change a street name. The process is there to ensure neighbors' voices are heard, and it's an action the community is on board with.
aliciaName the forthcoming Day Laborer Center after Chavez! Then he's truly memorialized for the good work he did.
Garrett DittfurthWhile I have the utmost respect for Mr. Chavez I do not want to see another street name change. It wreaks havoc on our maps, our addresses and its completely unnecessary.

RachelWhy are only the streets in N/NE Portland changed? Let's change Hawthorne Street to Bob Marley Way and see how the reaction is from that side of Burnside.

Joseph BuschWhat little thread remaining of the vibrancy and history of this neighborhood before the advent of the Minnesota Freeway would be severed, linguistially at least, by a name change. Interstate Avenue is one of the few arteries in Portland to truly embody the vibe of its' name. Perhaps only Sandy Boulevard can compare to its century long purpose and significance. While I very much support a movement to honor Cesar Chavez and the essential polyglot nature of the city, both in the past and as it moves forward, I see nothing in the present name of the avenue that implies either disrespect to its' past or willful ignorance of history.
Daniel M PotterKeep it INTERSTATE!!!

Curt BiekerWith all the development in Portland aren't there any new streets that can be named?
Elizabeth PotterPlease do not rename Interstate Avenue. Enough of our streets have been renamed without the permission of the cities residents. WE should be the one's who decide if a major road should be renamed
Anonymousas a resident of the area and living with the construction of the max lline and changing the name of portland blvd we have had enough. please leave our neighborhood alone.

Vincent StofferAs a native Portlander and Interstate area resident I strongly believe that we don't need any more token street name changes. Let's keep the local history of Interstate Ave. and honor Chavez in another way.
