Name: Mike Witham on Sep 11, 2007Comments: I concur with the petitioneers and would like to add: this blatent attempt at PC appeasement is a slap in the face to the vast majority of residents living in and around the affected neighborhoods. Why not change SE Stark St. It runs through a significant portion of the mexican community between Burnside and 140th. Point is - change it where it will MEAN something to the RESIDENTS and not just look good on a map.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Sep 11, 2007Comments: I dont want to see interstate avenue name changed. Leave it as it is. Our streets should not be changed to honor peoples names. Build a monument or a community center or a library or something that people can actually see and visit and use and remember the people that way.Flag

Name: Dale E. Miller on Sep 11, 2007Comments: Take the next new street and name it as such. The individual gets recognition and none of the problems associated this proposed change will occur. Portland Blvd should be: Portland Boulevard/Rosa Parks Way so that any existing address will work and (should anyone really decide to change the usage) the honorary name will work as well.Flag

Name: Katrina Wolffe on Sep 11, 2007Comments: Changing street names like this is also annoying to citizens who have lived here for years (or all of their lives) I still call MLK Union and I will continue to call Portland Blvd Portland Blvd for years yet. I hate it when the city decides to change a perfectly good street name for no reason other than to sooth their own ego that they are doing 'Good Things" for the cityFlag

Name: Lisa Wagner on Sep 11, 2007Comments: There are many ways to honor a community leader that are less disruptive than to rename a street. Parks, fountains, buildings, even schools can be renamed with less cost and unintended impact on community businesses. Targetting Interstate Avenue and its small businesses still struggling to adopt to the impact of the Max line on their business goes against the spirit of helping those who need help and the very legacy of Mr Chavez.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Sep 11, 2007Comments: Chavez Blvd would be more appropriate in a farming area; on Sauvie Island or Canby. There is no historical significance in the N. Interstate Ave area for the name. A more appropriate name would reflect the blue collar labor unions, shipbuilders, Polish anscestry, etc. Plus, this is such a bad precident! Every group is going to be petitioning to have a street changed to reflect THEIR minority, ethnic, religious, social group. And with recent changes - Naito & Rosa Parks, there are less and less reasons to say no, you can't have your group enshrined on a city street, only these groups, indivdiuals can.Flag

Name: Scott Grimes on Sep 11, 2007Comments: Stop wasting money! This in not vital to the operation of this city. Our city is in decay. Enough already with the touchy feely stuff and get this city back working on fundamentals. This is not as egregious as the renaming of SW Front Ave in terms of seeking public input but don't we all have better things to do with our time and money. If you need to look for better use of our money take a look around outside of the downtown core and you will see a city in need of repair. Streets that need repaving, water valves need replacement, parks needing maintenance and so on...Flag

Name: Jude Vencill on Sep 11, 2007Comments: The monies need to be spent on our schools not on street signs and maps. etc. The cost to our small businesses and the citizens of Portland would be a waste. The Portland farmers market would be a better way to honor Cesar Chavez. This way everyone in the city would have a chance to see his name not just the residents of North Portland. If we continue to change the names of our streets it could go on forever and we will slowly be erasing our history. We have already lost our oldest street(Union Avenue) and the only streeet named after our city(Portland Blvd). This must stop. In fact I feel we need to have a petition to stop the name changes for good. Thank You Jude VencillFlag

Name: Robert And Sharon Sullivan on Sep 11, 2007Comments: North Interstate Ave has a historical connection to North Portland as the commercial and travel connection betweeen Oregon and Washington. While Cesar Chavez had a great impact on the working conditions of migrant workers his efforts were focused in California. His connection to urban North Portland is pretty much non-existant. As the letter above states, the City of Portland has more pressing problems than spending tax dollars in an effort to be politically correct.Flag

We're TIRED of the rampant squandering of our tax dollars here in Portland, increasing property taxes, and getting NO benefit from the increases. Spend the money on schools, spend the money on homeless shelters, spend the money on battered women's shelters, but QUIT WASTING OUR TAX DOLLARS ON THIS FRIVOLOUS GARBAGE!! INTERSTATE AVENUE SHOULD REMAIN INTERSTATE AVENUE.Flag

Name: Jim Stewart on Sep 12, 2007Comments: I think that we should honor Mr. Chavez in some other, more tangible way. Maybe we could begin by treating all people fairly and recognize each other as equals. Perhaps we could "just say no" to profit-only oriented agribusiness and support initiatives to bring the family farm back as the most efficient and sustainable way to raise food and livestock. Mr. Chavez would certainly appreciate those types of effort more than having a street renamed in his honor. Small business is the backbone of this city and this country. Why would anyone think it's a good idea to disrupt small business even more than what's already being done These public tokens of respect are just that, tokens, and are merely excuses to ignore the core problems that face us all. Sincerely, Jim StewartFlag

Name: Anonymous on Sep 12, 2007Comments: I live in Kenton and I do not approve of the name change. I did not vote for it at the Kenton Neighborhood association "vote". Interstate as name has a significance as an "interstate" thoroughfare which will be "interstate" when MAX finally gets across the river to Washington. This is a politically incorrect thing to say: but historically since MLK was killed in 1968, many streets have been named for him nationwide, usually in areas where many African-Americans lived. Because African Americans were ghettoized (as in Portland) these were and are poorer neighborhoods. So the street name of "Martin Luther King Blvd" indicates that a street goes through poor neighborhoods. That may be one reason why businesses and corporations are reluctant to move to those streets: having that address becomes a stigma. So, following this reasoning, the name: Cesar Chavez Blvd, will stigmatize the north Portland neighborhoods as poor areas which is not true. Large corporate businesses might not want to have an address that instantly indicates that it is in a poor area. Alternately, the north Portland area does not have nearly enough Latinos to warrant having the name used here. Why isn't this being considered for East County/Rockwood where there is a much larger Latino populationFlag
