It was announced via several sources (including former Yahoo! employee and Upcoming founder Andy Baio's twitter) on December 17, 2010 that Yahoo! would either be shutting down or merging the social bookmarking service Del.icio.us. Del.icio.us, founded in 2003 and bought by Yahoo! in 2005, has over 5.3 million members, as well as 180 million unique bookmarked URLs. 100+ bookmarks are added every single minute; its user-friendly tagging system and toolbar make keeping track of websites easy and fun, and its "Hotlist" makes the site a conveyor of internet memes and trends. No other competing social bookmarking site can boast the popularity and general ease-of-use that Del.icio.us has. It would be in Yahoo!'s best interests, as well as the invested interests of its 5 million users, that Del.icio.us remain an active service. Millions of people will be severely inconvenienced, and tens of millions of bookmarks lost, should the site be shut down. Please, attach your name to this petition and pass it on to your friends and all you know (bookmark it too, because everyone loves a bit of irony now and again), and let us see if we can't convince Yahoo! to keep this wonderful, useful and incredibly necessary service.
