The news is surprising. Tavi Mounsithiraj, loved by so many students, alums and GC soccer fans, is being sacked as the head coach at Goshen.

Tavi has had success as the GC coach by all measures, but most important are those measures beyond the field, as Tavi's love for the game extends into a deep caring for his players and their development not only as athletes but as people.

Goshen College's philosophy is clearly stated on its athletic website:

"Our intercollegiate athletics program is an important facet of the total educational program at Goshen College. A quality athletic program provides opportunities for the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual development of its participants, players, and coaches. Quality includes a chance to succeed athletically. It also means fidelity to our college mission, fairness in opportunity for women and men, support for the academic aspirations of athletes, good sportsmanship and attractive facilities. Athletes have the opportunity to learn the important life skills of wise time management, leadership and teamwork. Such life skills contribute positively to students performance on the playing field, in the classrooms and in residence life. Athletic teams have numerous opportunities to model a Christian lifestyle."

In so many ways, Tavi is the embodiment of these values. While statistically the team has not done quite as well in recent years, many facets of complete students remain in tact. Team GPA has hovered around 3.30 on average in the last 5 years, graduation rate is close to 95%, and Goshen has led the nation in Academic All Americans. The reasons for his dismissal have not been clear, but if they are based solely on win/loss statistics, it is a telling statement of an athletics program undermining of its own values.
