Until recently, village associations and other local youth and non-profit groups have used “posters” in the store windows of willing vendors to promote their upcoming community activities. Stores chose to post signs or to decline to post signs, within their management discretion. Recently, the Design Standards Committee (DSC) has been interpreting its rules to prohibit such signs and has moved to enforce this interpretation. At its last meeting, the DSC adopted a new rule that limits community event signs to one per store, limits the size to standard letter size paper and requires them to be posted below eye level (less than 48” above the ground). Not only is this rule an unnecessary intrusion into the management discretion of a local business, it is contrary to the community spirit we hold so dear in The Woodlands. We would ask that the DSC permit up to three posters and that each store have the discretion to hang them as would be appropriate to their venue. As before, businesses would chose to post or decline to post signs. We are proud residents of The Woodlands. Please don’t misunderstand. We are grateful that, as The Woodlands grows, we are able to maintain our high standards of physical appearance. However, we feel that it is equally important that, as we grow, we take steps to assure that we are able to maintain our vibrant community spirit. Allowing a few community events to be promoted by willing local businesses does not seem too much to ask. By this petition, we are asking the DSC to reconsider its decision and allow us to maintain the vibrancy of our hometown.
