We are strongly opposed to the codification and implementation of the temporary “No Wake” ordinance for Big Carnelian Lake. We ask that you repeal the ordinance.

Below are several reasons that this ordinance is not needed:

  1. Any erosion is caused by wind wave action rather than boat wave action.

A. The wind is sustained over long periods completely out of our control

B. Depending on the day the wind blows from all directions, making no shore safe from the effects.

C. When the winds over approximately 12 mph whitecaps form which creates waves breaking on the shoreline.

  1. Each property owner has the individual ability to protect his or her shoreline. The watershed has restoration plans and often has money available for this purpose. The DNR has a permitting process and people can rip rap there shorelines to protect against erosion.
  2. Having or seeking to create rules will pit neighbor against neighbor. In effect long standing relationships will be forever ruined by opening up this argument
  3. The DNR has rules in place which keep require that boats need to keep 100’ clear of any docks or other boats. If enforced this will keep boats from operating too close to the shoreline giving time for the waves to dissipate.
  4. Big Carnelian is a recreational lake. Values of real estate are predicated upon this use.
  5. Big Carnelian continues to be one of the top rated lakes in the county and has improved year over year in sechi-disk readings without any need for any prohibitions to motor boat use.
