Name: Ankur Anil on Jul 13, 2009Comments: Dear Sir, I sign this petition in the capacity of being a life-member of INTACH, India The campaign against opencast coal mining in northern Jharkhand state in the catchment valley of the upper Damodar river threatening two hundred Adivasi and Peasants’ communities along with the persistent threat to the vernacular architecture of the region will receive a jolt if the 30 odd Open cast mines get a go ahead by the State government. The environmental and Forest Clearance Authority should do a self evaluation when they tend to clear such projects. Kindly act with a sense of justice and towards the threatened Natural Environment and endangered Cultural Heritage, and pay your earnest heed to the unique and ancient landscape of the Chotanagpur Plateau being sacrificed in a short-sighted rush for profits. Regards, Ankur Anil New Delhi. 13th July 2009. Email: ankuranil08@gmail.comFlag

Name: Robert Wallis, London on Jul 16, 2009Comments: I am deeply concerned about the latest plans to expand coal mining in the Karanpura Valley. Following my work in Jharkhand a few years ago, I am acutely aware of the negative impact new mines will have on the environment, the ancient cultural heritage of the state, and the sustainable way of life of adivasi communities, and also of the wider impact on climate change both in India and globally. I strongly support your campaign to bring this issue to the attention of the government and to many others. Sincerely, Robert WallisFlag

Name: R.Sreedhar on Jul 18, 2009Comments: It is time we review the entire gamut of coal mining operations particularly in Jharkhand and given the poor compliance of the environmental, cultural and social safeguards we seek a moratorium on new mines and shifting to a Risk-Benefit Analysis Regime than the mere EIA.Flag
