| 2154 | Neil Osborne | I am the President of the Jamaican Associates, Inc. a nonprofit organization that supports the positive dissemination of Caribbean culture in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I am a Jamaican, a person of color who attended and earned two degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst a Bachelor of Science in 1986 and a Master Degree in 1991.
I personally as well as a many members of the Jamaican Associates are greatly concerned about the treatment of Jason Vassell regarding the incident on the UMass campus on February 3, 2008. What transpired before the physical altercation must be consider in how the state handles the prosecution of this matter. It is unthinkable that two white non-students on the UMass campus can taunt a Jamaican student outside his dorm room with racial epithet then moments later physically assault him in the lobby of his dorm actually breaking his nose in the fracas, with the end result being the victim (the receipt of racial charged attack) gets prosecuted for attempted murder.
Furthermore, the lack of any criminal history for Mr. Vasell not playing a significant role in the prosecution’s decision making process on determining whether Mr. Vassell’s actions were anything other than in self defense of his own well being.
As the President of the Jamaican Associates Inc., I personally, and on behalf of our membership strongly urge the District Attorney’s office to review the circumstances and its charges against Mr. Vassell. The mere act of unnecessarily requiring Mr. Vassell to defend himself in a court of law is an injustice to all Commonwealth of Massachusetts citizens. |

| 2186 | Anika Martin | The charges against Jason are outrageous |
| 2187 | Sheldon Barnes | It is so surprising to hear about things like this so close to home. A lot of time I hear about these things, however, I thought they were things that happened in other parts of the country.
Making a hate crime a minor crime encourages the perpetrators while forcing the victims to just take what is given to them, as in physical assault just to stay free from trouble. I think that sets the wrong example. |
| 2188 | Jason Bechtel | Racism is once again given a green light by the "authorities"... |
| 2189 | Derek A. Ide | This is an absolutely absurd miscarriage of justice. Jason, you did the right thing, we are behind you. You should not have ANY sentance, let alone face two felonies. This disgusting display of not only personal, but institutional and judicial racism cannot go unchallenged. The people support you, and justice is on your side brother. |
