| 2005 | John Cipora | As an educator (HCC adjunct faculty) and a UMASS alumni (M.Ed. 2006, Ed.D. 2008), I am deeply troubled by the racially-inflected nature of the charges against Jason Vassell. It is incumbent upon us all as concerned citizens and members of the UMASS Amherst community to speak out against such abuses of the legal system. The zeal of the prosecutors is clearly being used against the wrong individual. I strongly support judicial review of the particulars of this case.

Matthew Bair | Everyone has the right to protect themselves. This would not be a case and there would be no charges if it was a white man who defended himself against two people invading his/ her home. The legal system should be ashamed and see this as evidence of a racist police and judicial system. I am from Michigan, and don't know of many people who would blame Jason for his actions given that his home was being invaded. I am surprised to see such racism coming from what I presumed to be a State ahead in Human Rights and Equality.

Anonymous | It is of concern to me that someone who is the victim of a hate crime is charged with serious offenses, and that one of the perpetrators is not charged. I hope that justice will prevail and that the charges against Jason Vassell will be dropped.

Rachel Smith | The charges brought against Jason are wrong. Too many people in today's society get away with racial hate crimes and it needs to stop.

Mary Santiago | I'm glad to support Jason. What happen to him is a travesty of justice in every way.

Kelley Hamaoui | It is outrageous that the attackers, especially one with a previous criminal reord of racially motivated violence would merely be charged with misdemeanors while a bright young college student with no previous criminal record would be charged with felonies for DEFENDING himself. It is an absolute disgrace to the American justice system and makes me ashamed that things like this are still happening 40 years after Martin Luther King's Civil Rights Movement.
George Hamaoui Jr. | This is a sick twist of the legal system against someone trying to defend himself from attackers. Any intelligent prosecutor and/or judge would review this case and greatly reduce or drop the charges against Jason.
