The sentence was handed down and it reflects the gravity of what happened to Captain which is all I ever really wanted. I actually feel like I can breathe for the first time in forever though we have to keep our eyes open because real change for animals is a …

BACKGROUND: This petition is in honour and memory of Captain, a 2-year-old German Shepherd dog, who was discovered on July 18, 2012 wrapped in a bloody sheet and left in a dumpster in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. When Captain was found he was emaciated, cut, stabbed, and brutally beaten (likely being rendered quadriplegic, and with brain hemorrhaging). Captain passed away from cardiac arrest shortly after being rescued from the dumpster. Brian Whitlock, Captain's "owner," pled guilty on April 9, 2013 to one count of wilfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering, or injury to an animal in accordance with Section 445.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada. His sentencing is scheduled for June 4, 2013.

THE PETITION:

We, the undersigned, are tired of hearing about animals who are abused while their abusers walk free. We therefore petition our government representatives, at all levels (British Columbia Premier Christy Clark and Prime Minister Stephen Harper), to ensure meaningful laws to protect animals are constructed and enforced. We wish to see those responsible for abusing, neglecting, torturing, or otherwise harming animals, held appropriately accountable.

The link between cruelty to animals and cruelty to humans has been well-documented, and protecting the animals will serve to benefit humans in the long run. Nonetheless, animals deserve humane treatment and adequate protection in their own right, so we call upon the British Columbia and federal Canadian governments to ensure laws are in place to provide such protection and see that those who do not uphold the law are punished accordingly. Thank you.

Captain was not garbage and we must do everything in our power to ensure the person who did this to Captain is brought to justice with an appropriate penalty.

Twenty five thousand signatures just popped up on the screen and I honestly had to blink a few times because that is just so many people who care about what happened to Captain. My coffee is cold now but I do not even care because seeing all these names makes me feel like maybe things could actually change for the better for animals who cannot speak for themselves.

Watching the total climb toward twenty-five thousand is honestly overwhelming and it keeps me up at night thinking about Captain but we simply cannot let this momentum fade now. If you have been waiting for the right moment to get more people involved please just send this link out right now because the people in charge need to see a wall of names staring back at them.

I keep staring at the signature count and thinking about how much noise we need to actually make to get the people in charge to look up from their desks. We are hovering just under that ten thousand mark and it feels like if we just nudge it over that line right now then maybe they will have to finally listen to what we are saying about Captain.

Brutality and cruelty should have consequences. It's inhuman, each thing he did, I feel sickened. Brian Whitlock should receive punishment. Please.

It is time Canada strengthened its animal abuse laws. There is a strong correlation about people who abuse/kill animals and humans. Stop letting animal abuse/killing be the gateway to human abuse/killing.

What is it that they are questioning? The owner is clearly a cruel, sick and violent person and should be punished to the extreme. I hate the thought that people think that "its just a dog". Captiain was tortured by the person he probably trusted most - that sickens me. I think there needs to be tougher laws against cruelty to animals - what if that person decides to treat a human being with the same cruelty?

I love this beautiful boy, I want to give Captain a kiss and tell him it will be ok. But, it wasn't.

Brian Whitlock must be made to be an example of true justice for this wonderful dog, Captain, who must not have been tortured and beaten to death for naught. Humans must be punished for their mistreatment of sentient beings so others will not resort to such brutality for fear of retribution. As a species we are often remarkably cruel and it must stop.

It is time Canada makes animal cruelty charges alot more severe. Enough letting people off with a warning or a fine, put them in jail for two to five years. Stop letting people get away with this abuse and cruelty and make a stand for the poor defenseless animals that die everyday at the hands of heartless cruel people!!!

I have a black male German Shepard , 7 years old, He is now having trouble with arthritis in his joints. Some days he has difficulty walking. We have medication for him from the vet and hope that it helps him. I am like the author of this article. I will help him if I can , no matter the cost. He is a part of our family. My wife and I love him very much. The man that did this horrible act, definately dosen't know Jesus and has a very cold evil heart. All he had to do is ask and someone would have taken him and gave him a good home. If I would have known, I would have taken him and gave him a good life. I hope the man who did this horrible act, finds and accepts Jesus. All of us, must be held accountable for our actions and if they are poor , cuel , evil choices, we must be prepared to be punished accordingly. God Bless you for taking a stand for Captain. I support you 100 percent.
