Since 2002, the United States Supreme Court has upheld rulings that school districts have the right to test any student involved in extracurricular activities.
Over the past few years the Liberty Hill ISD School Board and Administration have been approached with requests to perform drug and alcohol tests on students involved in extracurricular activities. These requests have been ignored.
The School Board and Administration were presented documentation on the means of applying for grants for these tests from the U.S. Department of Education. The grants cover the cost of the tests, and additional staff needed for implementing the program, performing testing, counseling for any student with a positive test, performing a drug/alcohol assessment and for referring the student to drug or alcohol treatment if needed. Still the request was ignored.
It has been said that there is not a drug problem in the school system. If you read the Williamson County calls in the newspaper, frequently there are notices of the Sheriff's Dept being called to the high school and even junior high for suspicion of drugs.
Many kids succumb to peer pressure and the possibility of a test may give the student the reason they need to say no. Please sign the effort for drug testing of extracurricular participants to help prevent drug and alcohol usage in our students.
