Old people should first and foremost remain in their own home. This can be achieved by providing home care support. If for one reason or another this is not viable and they need to go into a Nursing Home this should be done with great sensitivity. This does not happen in large nursing home settings. I have worked in both small and large Health care facilities. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the needs of the older person can be fully met in the smaller Home.It is well documented that accidents resulting in death is becoming more frequent in some of the larger Homes. An elderly lady fell to her death recently in a home that was catering for 100 residents.Would this have happened if the Home had only 12 residents? I doubt it. The elderly should not become a profit making commodity. It is impossible to provide appropriate staffing levels with relevent training in the area of elderly care in these larger Homes. I hear on a daily basis of the bad care and abuse that Is perpretrated in these Homes ,both private and public. This would be at least minimised if the setting was smaller.Remember that we are all going to become old. So to ensure that our needs will be met if God forbid we have to enter a Nursing Home. Please sign this petition to bring about legislation to reduce Nursing Home numbers. Thank you
