The US Supreme Court, as the third branch of democratic government, is responsible for maintaining equality and fair practice for all citizens as defined in the Constitution. This life-long position in governmental structure was established in a period of history when the average life expectancy was around 35 years. Life expectancy today is around 77 years. Placing political appointees in the Supreme Court for life today therefore can pack that position with inequitable influence. Consider: Every Chief Justice since the Eisenhower administration (1954) has been nominated by a Republican president. Today in 2012 the US Supreme Court is dominated by five Republican-placed men, all of whom also happen to be resolute Roman Catholics. This in no way represents the widely diverse political/religious makeup of average US citizens. These same five Justices have, as a bloc, consistently betrayed private citizen rights such as in "Citizens United" and "Flemming v. Nestor" rulings, among other decisions. It is time that term limits be set as well as a balanced representation of political and religious values within the Federal Judiciary which will appropriately represent the diverse values of we the people.
