We, the undersigned, are not going to simply accept that we must purchase an "iClicker" device for JRN 123 at Ryerson University for the Fall of 2012. To be forced to spend $53 on a clicker in order to pass the course is unfair, especially when considering that anyone who took JRN 123 last year did not need to pay for clickers; they were handed out to them. To make all 114 students in JRN 123 pay for a clicker, the school is making approximately $6,042 on us just for this course, and that's not including the cost of our textbook and all the other fees we pay Ryerson on a continuous basis. We sign this petition because we know that it is not right that we must be forced to buy these remotes. If they are truly a part of how the course is designed, intended on making our education better, then they should be provided to us instead of forcing us to pay for them, or otherwise fail. In other courses, chairs are essential to sitting and learning, but we don't need to provide our own. Cameras are essential to our filming stories for TV classes, but we do not need to buy them. If clickers are truly part of this course, they should be provided as part of this course like they have been in the past. If they are not essential, and are instead just an easier way of marking tests that could be done on paper, then we should be forced to pay for them. The cost of the remotes are not the problem, the problem is that we are not being provided with something that students before us were, despite paying the same fees as them. We sign this petition because as the instructor of this course, Lisa Taylor, tells us, we are consumers of education and we have the right to change how we are educated. We're exercising that right, and we will not be forced into buying a device in order to pass this course. If you have already purchased a remote, do not open it and return it to the bookstore. Please sign the petition and pass it along. The more signatures the stronger our case is. Let's actually have a say in how we're taught for once.

Once we have enough signatures, this will be sent directly to Lisa Taylor and the Journalism Department so that we can make a difference. Please write at least your real first name; as journalists you all know how important identifying your sources is and how bad anonymity can be for a story.
