TO: Davis County School Board We, the parents of sixth graders at Jennie P. Stewart oppose the plan to only include two full-time and one half-time teachers for the 6th grade class (2009-10 school year). Sixth grade is a very important year for students. It is preparing them for Junior High School. Currently, Jennie P. Stewart is planning on having two full-time and one half-time teacher for the 6th grade classes. This will result in approximately 25 students in each class in the morning and 37 students in both of the classes in the afternoon. This plan is ill-conceived. As parents, we are concerned that the school will have a difficult time fitting 37 students and desks in a room. With so many students and furniture in the room, it is a possible fire hazard. It will be overwhelming for a teacher to try to keep control of 37 students. But most importantly, many students will not get the individual attention they need and may fall behind at a critical time in their schooling. With so many students, it will be difficult to keep exceptional students challenged and struggling students on track. We therefore urge Jennie P. Stewart and the School Board to supply a third full-time teacher for the 6th grade class of 2009-10.
