The petition
Joomla is one of the world's most popular content management systems and is used by individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations to create collaborative, community-focused websites.
Within the last few years, the Joomla software has received numerous awards from the software development community including the Best Linux/Open Source Project at the UK Linux and Open Source Awards in 2006. But one of the primary reasons for Joomla’s success has been the support of third party software developers who provide extensions or “plug-ins” that greatly enhance the functionality and user experience of Joomla. The majority of these extensions are free, but at least 15% are commercial extensions which need to be purchased.
On June 15th, Open Source Matters (OSM), the legal owner of Joomla, announced that it had changed its previous policy to allow commercial extensions for Joomla and would force all third party developers to re-license their software to the free GPL model.
This petition is intended to voice the concern of thousands of users and developers that support the Joomla platform and who have enjoyed the freedom to choose between free and commercial extensions for their Joomla-based web site project.
We, the undersigned, encourage the Joomla Core Team and Open Source Matters to reinstate its previous policy to allow a mixture of GPL and commercial third party software.
