The omnibus bill titled the Safe Streets and Communities Act is a combination of the amendments from nine separate bills that had failed to pass in previous sessions of parliament. Also known as Bill C-10, the bill would make fundamental changes to almost every component of Canada’s criminal justice system. The new Omnibus bill proposes: New criminal offenses New and increased mandatory minimum sentences Increased pretrial detention and new, harsher sentencing principles for young offenders Longer waiting times before individuals can apply for pardons Increased barriers for Canadians detained abroad who wish to serve the remainder of their sentence at homeThe bill also introduces amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act , the Minister of Immigration would have broad discretion to deny work permits to any foreign national who is “at risk of abuse “ Implications/Impact of the Crime Bill  Studies have shown that it hasn’t worked in other countries. (USA)More people going to jail for a longer period of time which not only costs tax-payers money, but increases the likelihood of people re-offending. If prison becomes over populated with people with certain cultural or medical needs, they will not have the appropriate resources available to them. The fast pace of the bill being pushed through Parliament without proper evaluation and education to the public is something to be concerned about. If the bill was to be approved it allows the government  and all authorities to punish because of vague outlines This new bill will result in unconstitutional new mandatory minimums for offenders and young offenders This bill will bring minimal chances to receive house arrest This bill will bring harsher punishment, longer mandatory prison sentences and longer last consequences to young offenders Government will be able to deny refugees if they ‘believe’ they will be exploited or abused in Canada Government could deny offenders incarcerated abroad to be transferred home  We are calling on the Harper Government to drop the Omnibus Crime Bill, and reconsider implementing a bill , that does not include the introduction of mandatory minimum sentencing or ineffective deterrent strategies such as tougher sentencing, especially when concerning youth, and that include one that focuses rather on real preventative measures such as treatment and rehabilitation.
