The most effective way of controlling and reducing cigarette usage and discouraging initiation is by increasing the price of a cigarette through imposing a State tax.
Currently, the taxation of cigarettes in Sri Lanka varies between 63% - 67% depending on the length of the cigarette.
According to emperical data, if the tax levied on cigarettes is 90% of its price,
- A 10% real price rise would cause total consumption (combining the effects of prevalence and smoking intensity) to fall by around 6% for lower income groups, and 3% for higher income groups.
- Every 10% increase in the real price of cigarettes reduces overall cigarette consumption by approximately 3%-5%, reduces the number of young-adult smokers by 3.5 %, and reduces the number of kids who smoke by 6%-7%.
- A considerable decrease in health and social welfare costs borne by Government
- Government’s tax revenue will significantly improve resulting in increased funds for country’s development and social welfare
Approval of the cabinet paper proposed and signed by his Excellency the President and Honorable Health Minister that the cigarette tax to be levied at 90% will undoubtedly bring significant benefits to you, the entire society and the future generations of Sri Lanka.

Every 10% increase in the real price of cigarettes reduces overall cigarette consumption by approximately 3%-5%, reduces the number of young-adult smokers by 3.5 %, and reduces the number of kids who smoke by 6%-7%.
I agree with this to an extent. However, tax should be excess of 100% considering the harm & social complications that smoking causes.
If government can take mire than 100% tax from vehicles why they cant charge atleast 90% from cigarettes.please do it
This is a must and economically advantageous to a government too. Fully aligned with the presidents aim to curtail tobacco menace.
Hope the government will give a good fight and make a change as they promised. This is not just about us, but about the generations to come.....so it will be an investment.

well it is well needed to reduce the use of cigarettes since it is a one deadly way of creating cancers and making family lives miserable
