Comments: Below is my email to dean Andrew Kirk. ======= Dear Dean Kirk, I have read with great dismay that Mr. John Mossop has been stripped of his responsibilities and instructed via email to clear out his office. I started my undergraduate studies in the McGill Mining Engineering program in September of 1988. During my time at McGill, John Mossop was an important mentor and advisor to me. People like John make the mining program what it was then, and is now. John brings a wealth of first-hand industry experience to the program. For him to receive no financial remuneration, yet he continues to teach and advise students, shows his passion and commitment, something I fail to comprehend how the current McGill mining department could overlook by dumping him in this manner. In my opinion, it would be a great loss to the McGill mining community to allow John to be turned away. I encourage you to step in and ensure that current and future McGill mining students do not lose such a valuable resource. As I currently live and work in Australia, I am unable to personally sign and deliver the attached letter to you. If I was in Montreal I would definitely make the time to do so. By way of this email, please be aware that I strongly support the petition letter attached. Do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information. Regards, Carl Ross.

Comments: Dear Dean Kirk, It is with incredulity that I read the emails forwarded to me at this time of night. I am hopeful my message is amongst many others you have received concerned the issue, and I wanted to let you know that John Mossop has been (and still is 20 years later) an important part of my engineering undergrad experience. It is not common to find someone with John’s passion to serve the cause, and I truly hope that the university will find the adequate way to deal with the REAL hard-fact issues, which led to this hasty decision without having the Mining programme, lose one of its passionate pillars. Best regards, CL

Comments: Dear Mr Kirk, I Patrick Moryoussef Alumini mining Engineering class of 94 am completely astonished on the treatment allocated to Mr John Mossop for all his years of loyal service, dedication and motivation to all the undergraduates and graduates of Mcgill University. He has served as a mentor, an idol and an aspiration to many students who wondered if they had adventured in the right field, even today 18 years after my graduation I keep asking for news about John and his implications within the department. I strongly urge the department to review its decision and way of doing things and to be more compassionate and rewarding towards such contributors in our education system. I am currently acting as VP Operations of an intermediate gold company and I can sincerely say that my success is greatly a part of John’s role during my years as an undergraduate. Comments: Mr. John Mossop was an inspiration for me and many students whom went through the McGill Mining engeneering department. He doesn't deserve to be threated this way. He is a decent man with a great life experience to which many of us look up to. He should be allowed to continue to transmit his passion for the mining world as long as he is willing to...

Comments: A very serious mistake has just been committed in the McGill Department of Mining Engineering. And a very serious mistake must be fixed immediately to give justice to a great man named John Mossop. John has just been dismissed in the most unfair and unjustified ways from the Department and told to clear his office by the end of this month! If you don’t already know John personally, you should know that he is one of the most genuine and decent person, and no one would argue the fact that he is the “Soul” of the McGill Mining Department! Who has dedicated more time to the Mining Department than John: nobody!! John has changed in good ways the life of every student who has studied Mining at McGill, and the Mining Department shouldn’t be allowed to dump him like this for no reason, and prevent present and future McGill mining students from benefiting from his wealth of knowledge, his guidance and mentorship. John is simply too much of a valuable resource to the Department of Mining, and for the well-being of the Department and every students there, John is absolutely essential there! I am urging you to contact at once the Head of the Department of Mining Engineering to repair this outrageous and ungrateful act, and make sure John is reinstated immediately to his functions with the Mining Department!

Comments: Please accept this online petition signature as an endorsement of John Mossop to stay on the Mining Engineering faculty. As a McGill Engineering alum (class of ’97) I can attest to the value that John has added to the Mining department over the years, as a lecturer, an advisor, and a mentor to students. John’s strongest asset to the undergraduates has been to provide a practical outlook on the industry. As a professional engineer, John’s rich experience within the mining industry, from operations to consulting, bring a wealth knowledge to the Mining program, which he has always shared freely with the students. This has proven to be a treasured resource. I echo my colleagues’ sentiments on John’s value, and I strongly support a decision to keep him on board within the Mining department. There is no doubt that John provides esteemed mentorship to the students, which strengthens the program.

Comments: Dear Dean Kirk, John Mossop was a very significant contributor to my decision to pursue a career in mining engineering. In addition to providing real-world industry perspective and experience, he was the focal point of the networking and esprit-de-corps in our tightly knit department. I was recently made aware of a decision by McGill to remove John from his current role at McGill. The competitive advantage of McGill’s mining engineering program rests with the firm grounding in industry and practical experience embodied by Mr. Mossop. I respectfully request that you review this decision. Kind regards, Chris McElman B.Eng, McGill Mining Engineering ‘98

Comments: John Mossop was and I expect still is the best part of the Mining Engineering Faculty. I provides a valuable link between the theoretical and the practical. I hope his dedication and contribution to the department and the industry can be truly recognised by keeping him on and honouring him as he deserves.

Comments: This is unbelievable!! How could McGill rage war on our Mining Engineering symbol!? Mr. Mossop was always the encouragement that first and second year student needed to stay in Mining. He was the reason many of the young undergraduates wanted to stay in mining. It would be a shame to press Mr. Mossop out of the university. I’ll certainly disapprove these sorts of actions.

Comments: Mr. Mossop has been always a great advisor and mentor to me during my studies in McGill Mining. From the first year I was enrolled in the program, his advice during my courses are always remarkable. His first advice to the courses I needed to take in my first semester in McGill mining was "take this course (MECH289) because you'll probably need it in your work term" and yes, my first work term was mostly based on AutoCAD software wihch was taught throughout the course. On top of that, Mr. Mossop relationship with many engineers in the industry has lead to having great lecturers for various mining courses in a time when lecturers are needed in the Mining Department of McGill University. I personally do NOT think any other person cares about McGill Mining department and its students as much as Mr. Mossop. His experience as an adviser in the department is un-matched by any other person. and as a result, the void that is being caused right now will not be filled by any other person. Mohannad Dabbas

Comments: John remains the one and only mentor and teacher in the mining department with practical field engineering experience. Every graduate has benefited from his knowledge and he still represents a key asset of the department despite the fact that he has always volunteered to play an active part in the program. Combined with his expertise, John also possesses a great personality. His tendency to care for every student that comes his way is a trait that very few professors possess, and his team-oriented spirit allows every mining engineering class to maintain that "family-oriented" feeling the program has always been known for.

Reconsideration of this issue by the powers that be is strongly advised.

Comments: John has been one of the most tireless promoters of the profession and a very involved supporter of undergrads at McGill. He plays a very important role in a department where most professors are more preoccupied with their research than the well-being of their undergrads. As long as he feels he is able to play this crucial role for the students, he needs to be kept as McGill staff.

Comments: To Dean Kirk, McGill Engineering: Your Dean's message mentions that "McGill’s vibrant community of scholars has creat strategic ties with industry, universities, and government." Mr. John Mossop is a key figure in developing and maintaining industry and inter-univeristy ties for the Mining department. Furthermore, the President's message states that "James McGill dedicated himself to bettering his adopted homeland." Likewise, Mr. John Mossop has dedicated himself to bettering the McGill Mining and McGill Engineering department. Mr. Mossop embodies the spirit of McGill and McGill Engineering. He is a perfect example of what this university and department needs more of, not less. Kevin Bourque, B.Eng (mining) 2000
