Such attitudes show the ignorance and prejudice of people who think that way. After all, many people have disibilities, yet go on to lead fruitful lives...Joey is one of those special people!Flag

Name: Colleen Moore on May 13, 2002State: TNCountry: USComments: I am the mother of a child with Down Syndrome. In my state there are 3 different ways of getting to "walk" . The first is s regular diploma, the second is a special ed diploma, which is different only in the fact that the child didn't passed the state competency tests but fulfilled everything on his IEP, the third is a certificate of attendance. The 2 diplomas look exactly the the same as does the certificate of attendance the difference is that the diplomas show the child has graduated no matter how he did it the sertificate of attendance is just that. Why is Joey not eligible for a special ed diploma A very angry Special Ed MomFlag

Walking across the stage will not hurt anybody. But, instead, it should heal a lot of ill feelings. The best part is how "SPECIAL" it will make this young man feel. Maybe one of the few times in his life. Give him a chance!!!!Flag

I really think the administration should bear the responsiblity of missing that he was a few credits short. I agree, he is not going on to college to be a rocket scientist, so don't take his hope away. Let him walk and then let him do the credits in the fall!Flag

Name: Tammi Sprague on May 13, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: It seems like we have really strayed from any type of compassion when a child that has worked so hard to acheive what many 1000's of kids don't even try to do cannot be rewarded for his efforts. Mr. Sullivan I hope all of your family is always as fortunate as not to incur any learning disabilities and if they are maybe the School and all involved will be alot more human than any of you in Osceola County!Flag

Name: Joanne Tinsley on May 14, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: I'm an Osceola County resident and I say "Let Joey Walk". I recently completed my classes at Nova Law School and even though I am still working on the 20 page paper that will complete my credits, I had to opportunity to attend my graduation ceremony. I won't be getting the diploma until sometime next month, but even if I had planned to graduate after the summer semester, I could have participated in the ceremony. My law school graduation ceremony, which I didn't attend due to my husband's health, could never mean as much to me as Joey's high school graduation would mean to him. If a graduate school can allow students to have the experience of participating in a ceremony with their friends, regardless of having met the requirements, then I see no reason why a high school can't do the same. Hold the diploma, but Let Joey Walk!Flag

If they dont decide to let him walk I say we give them thire walking papers when it comes to thire re-election. So let him walk.Flag

Name: Meredith Smith on May 14, 2002State:Country:Comments: To not let Joey walk would be a disgrace to the public school system and a disservice to Joey. Having him walk with his classmates and be awarded a certificate of attendance wouldnt be the end of the world. In fact, it would be the honorable thing to do since the school is the one who messed up the situation. How did they expect him to complete the 4 credits needed if he thought he was finished and going to graduate. Where is the justice The school board needs to spend their time and energy with the important matters, like curriculum, money, books, teacher pay, etc..Flag

Name: Pamela Speelman on May 14, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: It seems to me that Joey and his parents thought he had completed his requirements so since the school made the "records" mistake, let Joey walk. When he completes his required studies to receive the "piece of paper" diploma, give it to him then. The ceremony enables him to remember that he did compete with his classmates for education (we must remember that the school was the one in error here). The diploma when needed will get him to his next journey.Flag

Name: Chelsea Knapp on May 14, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: To Whom It May Concern, Please Let Joey Walk. I know that there are some other reasons (however small and miniscule in comparison) that the school board may not want to take a chance and for once in their professional careers to step up to the plate for what they feel (not think) is the right thing to do. But they need to do this. If not for Joey then for themselves. We are all human beings. Some of us come in different packaging. I am living proof of what happens when the school board goes out on a limb and decides to give a young adult an opportunity. Without my (behind closed door) diploma I would not have been able to help my ill health mother and my younger sister. You see as a woman in the mid 70's you could not join the military. So it was because of the school board that not only did I receive my diploma but I went on to serve in the United States Army. I believed in defending our Civil rights then and I still do now. To bottom line it. Just try saying it with me. Repeatedly! Only 3 words. Ready Here goes. LET JOEY WALK! LET JOEY WALK! LET JOEY WALK!Flag

Name: L Morgan on May 14, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: Letting Joey walk would not cause any big problem for the school or the school board. Many students before him have walked with their class and not received a diploma, why should Joey be any different So he's a few credits short and he can supposidly be done in June. June is too late for him to walk with his classmates and more importantly his sister. Just let him walk with his class and he can finish his school afterwards. It's not right to deny him this once in a lifetime chance because the school was at fault in communication with the family.Flag

Name: Michelle Alessandri on May 14, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: Let him walk with his classmates and sister. If the school board would just listen to him and his parents. He doesn't need the diploma he just wants the feeling of walking across the stage with his friends. Good grief, major ivy league schools give honorary diplomas everyday to people who really don't deserve them. Joey does and should not pay the price for the school boards mistake. Come on officals lighten up you will feel good about yourself in the long run. Boy I would hate to be you for re-election.Flag

Name: KC Perin on May 14, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: Its hard to believe that members of the facility are supposed to be an example to our children. Its unfortunate that the school principal is not willing to show that his decision may have been made hastily and show the student body that by allowing Joey to walk, that he himself is human. Now that would be an example that I would respect!!Flag

Name: Dana Weatherby on May 15, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: There is absolutely no reason to dissallow this child from participating in his classes graduation activities even though he will not receive a diploma. The other children in this class need to learn about acceptance of people with disabilities. What would be a small gesture from the other students and the school board would be an enourmously important memory for one student. It's not a hard questions to answer - let him walk!Flag

Name: Sabina Nowik on May 15, 2002State: FLCountry: USComments: It is a ceremony for seniors. They should be able to walk if they want. It is not like they are giving them the actual diploma, which is what actually signifies graduation. Our school systems in Florida are so pety when it comes to stuff like this. They like to make bigger deals out of the small stuff and dont know how to handle the big things. They will push a failing regular ed kid through school because he is "too big to either stay in elementary or middle school". SO isnt this the same thingFlag
