To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:
The NT Intervention promised Aboriginal people real jobs. Instead, thousands of Community Development Employment Project (CDEP) positions have been lost. Under the new CDEP scheme, some Aboriginal people are being forced to work providing vital services such as rubbish collection, school bus runs, sewerage maintenance and aged care in exchange for quarantined Centrelink payments. There are cases of people working between 25-40 hours a week for the base rate of approximately $85 cash and $85 on the BasicsCard. Centrelink is threatening to cut off payment entirely if people do not participate in CDEP. The government is planning to expand income management across the NT at a cost of more than $350 million over the next four years. This money is desperately needed to create real jobs in remote communities and ensure basic services are being provided. We request that the Senate demand: -An end to compulsory income management -An end to current CDEP arrangements forcing people to work for the BasicsCard -A transition for all CDEP positions into fulltime waged jobs -Massive investment in job creation and service provision in all NT communities

The volume of support for this petition has reached a level that allows me to formalize our request for a meeting with the Minister. I am currently finalizing the brief and will submit it to the Senate office by the end of the week.

This is ridiculous how are they meant to live on that kind of money?? stop the madness.
why is this even allowed to happen in this country. shameful.
This is modern day slavery plain and simple. Working 40 hours a week for that tiny amount is insulting.
My family have seen what this does to communities. It is soul destroying and needs to change now!!
Totally agree. Stop forcing people to work for pennies and start creating actual jobs that pay a real wage.

people deserve to earn a living wage just like everyone else. give them proper jobs not these garbage programs.
