Name: Joe Holt on Jan 7, 2010Where are you from/where do you live?: Native San Franciscan, Golden Gate AvenueComments: Golden Gate park was intended for the use of all San Franciscans, its development well before the surrounding neighborhoods. Reacting to neighborhood complaints ignores the purpose of the park. The "too many cars on the grass" argument is made by silly people, self-important ignorant bureaucrats who have lost sight of their responsibility to the people of The City.Flag

We are San Franciscans trying to keep some native spirit alive to show the rest of the world we still care. Sorry we are not a multi-million dollar music event. But the public areas are there for all of us to use and assemble at, we pay taxes for their upkeep. We're sorry that we are not at City Hall all the time protecting our tax dollars from your unscrupulous colleagues.Flag

Jimmy Old Car Picnic is a very special local tradition and it is a shame that it is being destroyed in favor of commercializing the Park. As a person that lives 1 block from the Park, it is the HUGE crowds of people attending the Music Events in the Park that are a problem, NOT the Car Picnic. The Car Picnic is all LOCAL people, not tourists. We LOCAL residents deserve to use the Park as well as the big-money concert promoters. This entire deal is simply disgusting. Name: Mike Gunn on Jan 7, 2010Where are you from/where do you live?: San FranciscoComments: I have lived in San Francisco for over 30 years and I have gone to Jimmy's Old Car Picnic for many years. I do not bring a car to picnic, I merely go to see all the cars. I know a few people that have brought cars to the picnic and it is great to meet them there. The picnic is truly a melting pot where the old guy with the 56 Cadillac will talk about a mutual passion (cars) with a long haired youngster with his lowrider and vice versa. Over the years, both my son and I have learned things at the picnic and have been able to share a mutual interest without having to shell out money or drive a long distance. I feel more at home and relaxed at this picnic than at other "events" such as concerts that I have gone to in the same place. I also see more trash and damage to the area from something like Alice's Now and Zen concerts (which I also attend) than I do from Jimmy's picnic. I understand the need to protect the park and the need to generate revenue. However, I think that The City is being short sighted and letting dollars signs outweigh community with their current rather draconian permit process. I support the drive to allow the picnic to continue at the same venue and time.Flag

It adds to the civic culture of San Francisco and brings in people from all over the Bay Area. It is way lower-impact than Outside Lands or Bay to Breakers. It should be saved.Flag

Name: Donny Gillies on Jan 7, 2010Where are you from/where do you live?: San FranciscoComments: It's once a year, it couldn't hurt the grass more than a concert. If the people that live in the in the neighborhood don't like it then they should have moved next to the park. They shouldn't live in a big city for cripes sake, go move to the country. Hope this event does not get shut down, it's such a great family event. Everyone I know looks forward to it each year! Donny GilliesFlag

I don't get it. Bureaucracy at its finest!Flag
