Call for the Release of Dr. Ramin Jahanbegloo
We the undersigned demand the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Ramin Jahanbegloo. Dr. Jahanbegloo is a respected intellectual committed to principles of non-violence and cultural dialogue. There is no basis whatsoever for allegations by Iranian officials that he is a "foreign agent" engaged in unlawful activities. His arbitrary arrest and detention, the denial of his right to counsel and access to his family, are in violation both of Iran's obligations under international human rights law as well as the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran itself. We hold the Government of Iran responsible for his lawful and humane treatment, including in particular the Minister of Intelligence and other officials who are directly responsible for his custody and welfare. We further emphasize that torture, whether physical or mental, for the purpose of obtaining confessions or any other purpose, is a serious crime under international law for which the perpetrators may be held individually accountable before international tribunals and courts. |

Ramin Jahanbegloo was our colleague in the Department of Political Science from 1997 to 2001, when he was an active and valued member of our political theory community and taught courses in the history of political philosophy and Middle Eastern politics. He is fondly remembered here as a brilliant, thoughtful and engaged scholar, and as a warm and humane teacher and colleague.
