Comments: I wholeheartedly support this movement to remove Kirk Cameron from consideration for the IWU Hall of Fame. It is unclear to me what action he has taken that would make him deserving above others for such an honor.

Comments: I apologize if signing this petition is offensive to anyone. I don't know that I agree with everything said in the petition description above. However, I do feel compelled to sign this as it's the only avenue I've seen arise to express objection to the nomination of Cameron as an IWU World Changer, which I disagree with. FULL DISCLOSURE: I am an ordained Wesleyan minister, I pastor across the street from IWU, I am an adjunct professor and have worked for the school in a variety of ways contractually, but never full-time. Also, around 600+ of its students and a few hundred of its employees attend my church. In these capacities I have heard a great deal of disappointment about Cameron's nomination to this award from students, faculty and administrators, but I do not sign this in any official capacity, but only as an individual and an IWU Alumnus who had hoped to see the World Changer Award become something more meaningful than it has. I was not that eager to see Truett Cathy chosen over IWU Alum (and modern day Christian Martyr) Cheryl Beckett, but I could at least see that Cathy fit part of the World Changer vision. Still, I had hoped Beckett would be chosen for the following year. She was not, signaling she never will be. However, Cameron's choice at this time just seems silly and ill-fitting to me for a variety of reasons. The whole idea of a World Changer at the start was to honor a believer who made a difference in the world on it's own terms--someone who could be a model for current IWU world changers-in training (which is why Beckett would be the perfect choice). Cameron's story is quite opposite of the original vision. He's someone who was in the world succeeding on its own terms (albiet as a teen heartthrob), and not long after his conversion and becoming dissatisfied with "the world" he left it in order to become more and more parochial and ingrown in his anti-intellectual extremism which has been abrasive to me for more than a decade (I encountered some of his apologetic work with Ray Comfort perhaps a decade ago and asked the members of my church not to use it for their small groups.) He is entitled to his views, of course. But the extremely combative approach he has taken, the way in which he has alienated so many believers whom he sees as outside the camp (by his definition, even I, a theologically conservative ordained Wesleyan, would be questionable), his anti-intellectual approach to science and theology, along with his confrontational apologetics-as-manfight, all lead me to think of this as a very poor choice that will make IWU look bad. IWU can do what it wills in this regard of course, but as a concerned Alum I am signing this petition. I don't agree with everything said in the petition description above, but this comment shows my view of the situation and why I feel I should sign. -David Drury Wesleyan Pastor

Comments: As I begin, let me first say this: I stand in full support of our university administrators and board of trustees. I believe that they truly have the best interests of the university in mind, no matter how many times we may think that they're completely crazy. I have relationships with several of them, and know their hearts. They're great people. Also, let me state that I understand that the process of selecting a world changer is a years-long process involving many individuals, as expressed here: http://www.iwusojourn.com/2011/03/31/collegestuffswap/ I believe that, thus far, the university has made mostly wise decisions concerning who they have chosen as world changers. From Bob Briner to Truett Cathy, they've been overall good choices. However, I cannot support the decision of this panel to select Kirk Cameron as a World Changer. As well-intentioned as this choice may have been, I do not believe this choice fits the university's own standards of choosing a World Changer, which are: -Top dog -Widely known -Salt & light -Will not fall from grace I believe that in at least two of these areas, Mr. Cameron falls short. I have immense respect for the man—he's done great things. But he's not a world changer. I believe Mr. Cameron is widely known, and could even make the argument that he's been salt & light. While I may not agree with his methods, I cannot deny the impact he has made in the Kingdom. I do not think he meets, however, the other two criteria: top dog & will not fall from grace. It is not possible to argue, under any stretch of the imagination, that Mr. Cameron is a "top dog," especially considering the original vision of a "world changer" given from Bob Briner's book, "Roaring Lambs." When he was on Growing Pains in the 1980s, Mr. Cameron was not a believer. Since that time, Mr. Cameron has not appeared in any significant secular works—secular being the key words. This is the vision of the World Changer, and he has not fulfilled it. His parts in "Left Behind" and "Fireproof" do not meet the standards of impacting the secular world as is necessitated by the bestowing of the award. On not falling from graces, Mr. Cameron has proved himself to be an inviable candidate in recent days. He recently, and infamously, referred to homosexuality as "detrimental, and … destructive." Regardless of your position on the issue of homosexuality, you cannot argue that calling homosexuality detrimental and destructive positively contributes to the conversation between the church and the world in the slightest. He has set back the conversation on this issue. In conclusion, I exhort the administration to address these issues. Even if it is far too late to cancel Mr. Cameron's appearance, the university should address these issues publicly, in a chapel service, prior to Mr. Cameron's appearance. It's only reasonable, in a community of Christian academics, to present the reasoning and purpose behind the university's decision to persist in their choice of Mr. Cameron.

Comments: I was saddened when I first heard the announcement. I have no problems with Kirk Cameron as a man. I do have a problem with IWU elevating him to this level of honor. One of the criteria to be inducted as a World Changer is that you are a leader and at the top of your field. You would have to be crazy to think of Kirk Cameron as a leader (or anywhere near the top) in the world of mass media. Additionally, I thought the point of the Society of World Changers to begin with was what Bob Briner speaks to in "Roaring Lambs". He talks about Christians in all facets of the workforce, not just working for religious-based organizations. Kirk has chosen to exclude himself solely into Christian-based work, thereby missing out on reaching a large segment of the population (who really need to be reached in the first place). As an alumni who truly believes in the concept of "World Changers," I am extremely disappointed.

Comments: The problem is not Kirk Cameron. The problem is that only the faculty has any say on who our school as a whole is choosing as world changer. This ABSOLUTELY needs to change. Kirk Cameron is very likely a man with strong, genuine, and pure beliefs- however the certain actions he takes regarding these beliefs can reflect negatively on us. Students, Alumni, and THE REST of the IWU family should have a say in who we put as a representative of our values. To have it any other way is absolutely disastrous! CHANGE this.

Comments: As a proud alum of Indiana Wesleyan University, I am extremely disheartened with the university's decision to induct Kirk Cameron into IWU's hall of World Changers. The Christian worldview that IWU espouses and seeks to impart to its students is significantly different than that of Kirk Cameron. His antagonism towards science and serious intellectual pursuit are not only different from that of Indiana Wesleyan but antithetical to the serious academic mission of the school within the framework of a Christian worldview. As an alum or IWU and a licensed minister in The Wesleyan Church, I have serious concerns about the repercussions of associating and endorsing Kirk Cameron for our community of faith. Particularly, as I look to this next generation of children, students, and young adults growing up in the church, I see many of them struggling with their faith and leaving the Church because of our often (and unfortunate) anti-science perspectives. Cameron's views only perpetuate this view of Christianity today and what is more difficult for me is that IWU's science programs seem to be one of the most well-respected within the Christian university circle. That being said, I see it as a dire mistake to induct Kirk Cameron into IWU's hall of World Changers. I fear that the image of IWU and it's science program that it has worked--and is working--so hard to build will be seriously tarnished, not to mention the effect it will have on the school entirely, seriously jeopardizing its credibility as a serious academic institution.
