The Irish Traveller Movement was created to provide a platform for Travellers and Traveller groups to come collectively together to share information and develop a collective vision on policies that would promote equality for Travellers in Irish society.
The ITM aims to:
Promote the recognition of Travellers as a nomadic ethnic group having its own distinctive culture and lifestyle
Have that culture and lifestyle resourced
Challenge the racism- individual, cultural and structural- which Travellers face
In order to achieve these objectives, the ITM:
Exchanges views, debates ideas and develops policies in relation to Travellers.
Promotes Travellers' self-determination.
Presents policies to local, national and international statutory bodies and agencies and any other bodies that it considers appropriate which would alleviate the hardships Travellers face
Promotes the adoption and implementation of Human Rights Standards in relation to Travellers as outlined in relevant United Nations, E.C. and Council of Europe conventions, declarations, covenants and charters.
