The bulldozers must be stopped. Are you ready? |
| 102 | Jonathan Samuel | I have fond memories of visiting the Island House with my grandparents whilst on holiday from Sussex during the eighties.
Always a great atmosphere & welcome to be found there.
I live in Pembs now & whenever I'm back in Llanelli I like to call in.
It's such a shame if the developers get their way & destroy a truely great pub for the sake of another souless shopping mall.
Good Luck in your quest to save The Island House.
Long may it stand. |
| 103 | willie | llanelli would rather knock down caracter and build eyesores like they have done on the beach.
no sense at all |
| 104 | E F SAVILL | As a newcomer to Llanelli, it saddens me to see the town being destroyed by outsiders with an axe to grind. I recently attended a planning meeting in Carmarthen and was shocked to hear that those voting on decisions had not even visited sites under discussion. |

| 108 | Anonymous | Yet again the council want to destroy another landmark of Llanelli, yes the town needs to go forward, but unless we get rid of the council of Carmarthen and have Llanelli as a Borough in its own right, Carmarthen will always be out to destroy Llanelli |

| 113 | Eddie Hill | During the time I lived in James St the Island House was a meeting point pub where everyone called at for a pint and a chat. No TV,no pool table,no gambling machines just plenty of hwyl and a fair few gamblers myself included studying form. I was introduced to the pub by my late father-in-law Les Vodrey,Les used to meet all his friends who then became my friends along with other regulars and now their families are friends of our families. Even though I have not called for a pint for some time(I live outside of town) I was saddened read of the current situation, has Llanelli gone "bonkers" the way Llanelli is going there will be very little history for our children, children's generation thats all they will have is retail parks, golf courses(not that golf courses are a bad thing) and disused factories and Industrial Parks waiting for redevelopment. We all accept and most of us understand that Llanelli must look to the future and become more cosmopolitan to attract inward investment and wealth but to achieve this landmarks like the Island House must be protected it would be like visiting London to find that "Big Ben" had been erased to the ground by bulldozers. Please take a step back and leave a little bit of our History intact for people to enjoy. |
| 114 | keith skivington | we must try and save this pub it is so nice to see some of the older bulding in the town . it would be very nice to see this as a land mark into the town |
| 115 | R.J.Lewis B.E.M. | Another example of the arrogance of the planning department of Carmarthen County Council.Total disregard for the views of the people of Llanelli.Surely any planner of any worth could incorporate a unique pub such as the Island House into the overall scheme |

| 119 | Jim Jones | Destroying beautiful historic buildings like this will be the death of a small town like Llanelli.
Keep the town alive, keep the Island House. |
| 120 | Ronald Evans | Even though I live abroad now Island House will always represent one of the nicest places to go in llanelli. A friendly crowd and a nice atmosphere. I go there every time I visit. |
| 121 | paul rossiter | we must keep this landmark open |
| 122 | Elwyn Davies | Somethings need to be kept in Llanelli - you can't knock it all down |

| 125 | Anonymous | Yes we both agree that we need to keep this public house as a focal point as we enter Llanelli. This is a nice looking building, we go to other towns and cities and they renovate old buildings not knock them down. Keep the character of our town. |

| 132 | Ruth Price | There is little of old Llanelli left and loads of carparks. I hope this pub is saved. |
| 133 | David Davies | Many happy memories of this lovely old pub, and of a town which was once free of bulldozers and nannying out-of-touch politicians who think they know better than the local people |
| 134 | Anonymous | As well as a unique landmark in an increasing concrete jungle, the pub is part of so many people's history. My G G Grandmother Margaret Thomas 'kept' the pub c 1915 - 1920 together with her daughter Emily Williams. Margaret was the grandmother of Watcyn Thomas captain of Wales in the 1933 season. |
| 135 | Elizabeth Derrick | I have a particular interest in Island House, as my great, great grandmother Elizabeth Clement used to be landlady there - as I discovered when doing my family tree. It is a lovely looking building and should definitely be preserved. |
| 136 | Gregory Clement | Let's keep this important historic landmark!! |

| 139 | Anonymous | An integral part of the fabric of the town. Decisions are being made by marketing people and decided on by non Llanelli residents. New is not best and some part(s) of old Llanelli MUST be retained and The Island House is one of them. |
| 140 | Amanda Rees | The Council is these days acting as a force within their own right, and they call it democracy? Then why are the public not listened to?
There will no longer be any heritage or past to this town, unyet that is what makes it unique, it will NEVER be a Cardiff, it should differentiate itself.
Llanelli will soon be full of flats, houses and global chains, with only a few plaques to remember the past, so lets save Island House. |
| 141 | Kenneth Rees | What next will C.C.C destroy? They intend to destroy enviroment (wind farms) Listed buildings, Llanelli. They are attempting to accomplish what Hitler failed to do..and so succeeding. Lets stop them! |

| 143 | Anonymous | Please stop this mindless vandalism and leave a little bit of tradition here in Llanelli. Modern is good but leave a bit of history to pass on. |
| 144 | Richard | The Island House should stay. Carmarthenshire County Council are doing a good job of wrecking Llanelli. If this pub was in Carmarthen the council wouldn't dream of knocking it down. I think it's becoming true what some people are saying "Llanelli is a roundabout between Swansea and Carmarthen" Come on you good for nothing councillors "Let the Island House Stay" |
| 145 | Dr Byron E Richards | The Island House is the last 'character' pub in the town centre and should be an integral part of the new development and not demolished. Llanelli, in common with other towns in South Wales, is still obsessed with the dated 60's mentality of demolishing all old buildings of historical interest and replacing them with cheap structures which become shabby and ugly very quickly. The fact that the brewery building and Llanelli House are being left to rot is typical of this short sighted idiocy. In England such buildings are being preserved as they make a town look more attractive and more likely to attract investment and tourism. The Island House in particular falls into this category and is also the only traditional pub left which isn't blighted by loud music and flashing lights - it must be saved !! |

| 150 | Jeffrey M Watkins | To Carmarthenshire Council Members: Why save a 200 year old, local landmark like “The Island House” in Llanelli?
It’s been some 41 years since I left Llanelli; for university and then for work in Africa and Brazil. In that time I’ve returned “home” countless dozens of times and so even though I left Llanelli, Llanelli has never really left me. But what I carry in my mind and what I look for, to get my bearings when I return, are the landmarks.
Landmarks are distinct and special; they are the people (family and friends) the Institutions (like Côr Meibion Llanelli) and the sites and buildings of character and significance (like “The Island House”). The lattermost landmarks may be likened to ancient and unchangeable precepts, the cultural characteristics that form part of our heritage and should continue to stand as part of the inheritance for generations to come. Take them away and you take away part of the identity and soul of a community. This is not a new concept; to quote a Jewish law: "Thou shalt not remove thy neighbours' landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance," and the Book of Proverbs 22:28: "Remove not the ancient landmark which thy fathers have set." So I beg the Council's executive board member for regeneration , Mr Clive Scourfield, and the rest of the Council, to please consider this and try to seek regeneration without the degeneration of our heritage and, if good sense fails, to heed the warning from The Essays by Sir Francis Bacon, “Cursed (saith the law) is he that removeth the landmark.” Please find a way not to demolish The Island House. |
