The following petition highlights three issues, that is representative of opinions not only in the flats, but residents past and present from all of the buildings:
1) Better communication and accountability:
We urge the monthly minutes of the meetings between student bodies and the office to be shared with students.The residents would like to put forward a request for an online moderated forum administered by student reps which can be shared at committee meetings so as to keep everyone in touch with what is happening in ISH and encourage at least some form of debate so as to help residents feel more involved in the process. For the most part residents find the attitude of staff that they interact with indifferent, out of touch and very commonly unprofessionally callous that can harm the experience of even the residents
It may even be beneficial to the organisation, as it may help avoid unnecessary procurement of items that do not really sit well with the students.
2) Internet: ISH has switched over to wireless which is commendable given the intricacies of the issue, but the speed and reliability are still very much lacking. We would like to commend ISH for it's efforts, but feel that the internet problem unfortunately still has a long way to go before it can reach at the very least an average standard of quality.
3) Internal Landlines:
Flat residents are essentially paying for an intercom service. It is a service with little or no practical benefit to most of us, as it is almost as expensive as an external land line service and incompatible with any external service provider.
At the very least flat residents should have the option to opt out of this, so that they can at least get private internet connections or BT international calling facilities without paying two companies at one time.
