Candace McCollett | The midwifery model of care is the SUPERIOR form of care for 95% of all pregnant women. Women and babies should not be denied this.
Stacey Larner |
Sadie Lake | It is the right of every woman to birth her children in a safe and protected environment. For many that has come to be synonimous with homebirth with a qualified midwife. It is a crime against humanity to take this right away from families. Midwives need support, not only from the mainstream medical institution, but especially from the insurers of that industry in order to continue keeping moms safe and protected.

Maryen Cairns | This is really shocking news. Another blow to the rights of mothers to give births in their own homes with their prefered midwife. Very sad indeed.

Laura Marks | It is imperative to reinstate this insurance. Independent Midwives deserve to be able to practice wherever they choose. The services that they offer women at home are valuable to society.
Bess Coleman | It would be serious step backwards for homebirth in Ireland to be terminated.

Kate Allardice | Please continue to provide indemnity insurance to the Irish independent Midwives, and in so doing, provide birthing options to the women of Ireland. Don't follow the Australian example where independent Midwives still operate, but at an enormous personal emotional and financial cost. Many women are unable to afford to pay for a midwife and rural women in particular are forced to travel long distances, leave the support of their families and give birth in unfamiliar hospitals. This often leads to early inductions and increased intervention rates - all of which are far more costly than covering insurances for stay-at-home midwifery care.

Lieve Huybrechts | I want to support the Irish Independent Midwives, because, being a flemisch homebirth midwife I know that homebirth attended by skilled midwives is safer than hospital birth for low risk women.

Sharon Kinsella | Again this is another example of the control that is exercised over women. To have choice is a basic human right. Lets not deny women the right to choose where to give birth.

anne leyland | I really do think that this will really destroy birth choices for women and deny opportunities for midwives to practice autonomously and indepenently.

Rachel Doyle | Choices in childbirth are an extremely important element in the way in which mothers and in particular new mothers adapt to their new situation.

Joanne Smethurst | I had the very great privilege of living in Ireland from August 2001 until September 2002. Since then I've had two children and I'm shocked that my friends and work colleagues in Ireland are given such limited childbirth choices - and the withdrawal of this insurance will restrict these limited choices even more! Please act now to stop this happening so Irish families can choose a peaceful homebirth if they desire it. If we were given the chance to move back to Ireland for work, I think I would have to decline until my 'childbearing' years are over so I could choose the birth practice that suits my family best.
