Louise Stynes | I had a planned homebirth in 2006 (having had 2 babies in hospital). It was truely the most amazing experience of my life. Ireland needs this service and the HSE and hospitals have to start supporting our Independent Midwives. Ireland needs choice when it comes to birthing options and we should have a good look at the UK for services they offer. . Our Independent Midwives are doing a great job. Keep up the good work.

Sharon McCabe | This is outrageous as a mum and a midwife Im very sadened. Ireland is heading backwards what is happening to our right of choice

Lorraine Milne | I was truelly shocked when I heard the news about the insurance being stopped. When will people come to realise that childbirth is a natural thing not a medical procedure-and should a woman feel more comfortable having a homebirth, she should have that choice!

HELEN OMAHONY | I HAD A HOME BIRTH IN IRELAND FOR MY FOURTH CHILD AND IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER. MY FAMILY COULD COMFORT ME, I DID NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MY OTHER CHILDREN, (I HAVE NO EXTENDED IN IRELAND) , IT TOOK LESS THAN THE TAX PAYERS MONEY THAN IF I WAS IN HOSPITAL, I FREE'ED UP A MATERNITY BED FOR SOMEONE ELSE WHO NEEDED IT, AND MY HYGIENE STANDARD IS A GREAT DEAL HIGHER THAN IN MY LOCAL MATERNITY HOSPITAL. MY MIDWIFE WAS GREAT AND IF MIDWIVES CANNOT LEGALLY DELIVER BABIES AT HOME, THEN MOTHERS COULD BE A POSITION WHERE THEY HAVE TO GIVE BIRTH WITHOUT ONE WHICH WOULD BE UNSAFE.
Anonymous | how can removing insurance from the independant midwives help alleveiate the problems within the maternity service.its a disgrace that woman who choose a homebirth are now having that choice removed.

| 824 | Marianne McKeogh | I am pregnant with my first child I would love to have a homebirth. Unfortunately, there aren't any Independant Midwives in my area. I live in hope that I can have a homebirth in the future if I am lucky enough to get pregnant again.
Withdrawing insurance for Independant Midwives would be a huge blow for moms and their unborn children all over the country who believe that child birth should be a natural, rather than a medically managed, experience that, in most cases, can be easily managed at home. |

Caroline Robertson | I think that this is a terrible step back for the woman of Ireland. It will have a detrimental effect on the midwifery profession if it is seen as a non-option to become an Independant Midwife providing much needed service to woman who want to labour and deliver at home.

Aoife O'Donovan | Please reinstate the insurance cover for the midwives. Women will be left without a homebirth option which would be a huge blow to all those who for whatever reason do not wish to give birth in hospital. Aoife O'Donovan

Maebh O'Neill | Please allow Irish mothers to have a choice of birthing options. IAs it is, our options are limited enough to hospital or home - don't take the home option away by not insuring our midwives. A normal birth is not a medical procedure!
