The Petition

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about Iranian efforts to develop a
nuclear weapons capability. Efforts by the United States, the European Union, and
others to negotiate in good faith with the regime have thus far failed to produce a
single real concession by the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Given the
dangerous habits of their regime, we fear what such a result would have not only for
the region, but the world.

Iran is the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism. However, we recognize
that the greatest victims of the Iranian regime are the people of Iran
themselves. The basic political, civil, and religious rights of the Iranian
people are regularly violated. Their effort to exert their right to freedom of
expression and assembly after the fraudulent 2009 Presidential Elections
was met with an iron fist. We also note the regular calls by this same regime
to “wipe Israel off the map,” as well as regularly deny the Holocaust.

Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency have recently issued a
report noting that Iranian efforts to produce higher enriched uranium have only
increased. Iran has repeatedly denied inspection of their facilities, while actively
boasting of their increasing ability to utilize sophisticated missile technology.
Leading members of the regime make active threats to close off the Straights
of Hormuz, denying the United States and any other state access to crucial
shipping routes and oil refineries. This has the potential to drastically affect
global energy prices and cause worse crises still.

Considering the very real threat that Iran poses to Israel, the Gulf region, and the
world, we ask students, faculty, administration, and community leaders to commit
to the following:

1. Fully support any and all efforts, diplomatic, economic, and otherwise, to
prevent an Iranian nuclear weapons program. No option of any kind can be
taken off the table.
2. To actively promote awareness of the threat of an Iranian nuclear program
by any available means.
3. Strongly urge local and elected officials to the same.
4. We shall strive to ensure that the university and all local institutions are in
full compliance with said sanctions.
