On the iPhone there are only 4 spots on the dock and on the iPad there are 6. On the iMac there are seemingly unlimited spots and many options for the dock. If some of these preferences (such as dock size, position on screen animations, etc.) could be accessed on iOS devices, then many more apps could be placed on the dock like the iMac.
