An Open Letter to Prof. Dr. Michael Hengartner, President of the University of Zurich:
Dear Prof. Dr. Michael Hengartner,
We are a group of scientists and women's right activists working on promoting women in science. Our goal is to help universities and research institutions embrace and empower gender equity, respect of women scientists. We also support women scientists who are facing acts of sabotage of their work and scientific results when they refuse sexual harassment. Our members are based in Canada, France, Germany, Austria, Algeria, Tunisia, USA, Egypt, Australia, and UK.
On Friday 29th of August, your University is organizing the 10th Symposium of the Zurich Center for Integrative Human Physiology. For this event you will receive, at Zurich Center for Integrative Human Physiology (ZIHP), Dr Heribert Schunkert from the German Heart Center in Munich.
The talk of Dr Schunkert has been scheduled after the keynote lecture about Fraud, plagiarism in science by Dr. Ton de Craen from the Department of Internal Medicine, Leiden University Medical Center, and the Netherlands.
What a coincidence ! You invite someone, who is involved in supporting plagiarism, sabotaging women scientist's work, and violating their authorship rights, to a talk about research integrity !
We formed "Support_SM" (https://twitter.com/Support_SM), a committee supporting Mrs Maouche who, after refusing sexual harassment at workplace, is victim in several cases of violation of her authorship rights, plagiarism of her scientific work, and discrimination.
Mrs Maouche, a highly motivated scientist and brilliant engineer, was born in Algeria where she obtained herbaccalaureate (Abitur) followed by successful studies of engineering in computer science and networking.
She moved to Paris to pursue her post-graduation studies of medical informatics. She achieved two masters of research at the University Pierre & Marie Curie (Paris VI) and the University of Sorbonne. She also achieved a PhD of Bioinformatics and several international trainings.
During her PhD she collaborated with Dr Schunkert and other European partners within an EU-funded research program.
After hersuccessfulwork within this researchproject, she received multiple research position offers, mainly from the University ofCambrdige(UK), and from Dr Schunkert (University of Luebeck before he moves to Munich).
She chose Germany and she moved to Luebeck with many dreams and ideas for her research projects. Dr Schunkert, not only he destroyed hercareer, but he had with her cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatments.
1- Dr Schunkert supported a case ofplagiarismin which a clinical doctor (Dr Riedel) from his department (when he was in Luebeck) translated from English to German amanuscript, which was previously submitted by Mrs Maouche to Circulation, and submitted it as hisdoctoralthesis (http://www.students.informatik.uni-luebeck.de/zhb/ediss1112.pdf) ! The thesis was examined and compared to the initial manuscript by a Germanlawyerwho confirmed theplagiarism.
2- The same manuscript was plagiarized by another clinical doctor (Dr Sager) who submitted it to DFG, German Research Foundation to obtain funds for hispostdoctraining inthe USA(http://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/person/20886043). This was also supported by Dr Schunkert. He previously forced Mrs Maouche to share first author position with Dr Sager (who just collected some blood samples !). Dr Schunkert has no respect to women scientists.
3- Dr Schunkert supported an identity theft crime (a German doctor who had illegal access to Mrs Maouche's American Heart Association account, submitted her talk and replaced her without her permission (thanks to the German police who confirmed this crime).
4- Dr Schunkert was also involved in a
case of “Confidentiality breach by an associate editor of PLoS ONE (Case ID:
The issue was submitted to PLOS ONE Journal who confirmed that "Dr
Schunkert resigned as editorial board member for PLOS ONE several months ago,
however, should he have remained as Academic Editor we would have taken the
necessary actions in relation to the concerns about the confidentiality in the
review process of the manuscripts he handled".
To summarize: we have reported here only a limited number of cases of scientific misconduct in which Dr Schunkert is involved. We do notunderstandhow can the University of Zurich invited him.
We kindly ask you that your University should select only those scientists who respects ethics, research integrity, andwomen'srights.
Finally, we would like to congratulate Mrs Maouche for her courage, determination, and dedication to science. We thank her for her efforts to promoting research integrity. We will support the project (http://ethics-and-integrity.net) she founded to defend victims of plagiarism and sexualharassment.
