Approximately 12% of the U.S. populations in America have a significant hearing loss. That is far less than the percentage of people that have glasses. Insurance companies have no problem covering the cost of glasses; however they won’t pay for hearing aids. They are far more expensive than glasses and less people need them. Hearing loss occurs in 5 out of every 1,000 newborns. Kids that are born with hearing loss or affected by it starting at a young age will most likely need hearing aids. Most of those children with need them for the rest of their life. Approximately 3 million children in the U.S. have a hearing loss; 1.3 million of them are under the age of three. As children grow through the years they need to get new hearing aids, whether it be because they outgrow of them or they are too old and worn out. They are a necessity to those with hearing loss just as much as those who need glasses. It is very costly to keep up with the price of having hearing aids. Buying batteries for them very often gets expensive, and adds up when you’ll be buying them for the rest of your life. Overall, I believe that insurance companies should help out at least a little with the cost of hearing aids. They need to be aware of the fact that there are children, people, and families that are unable to pay for hearing aids, and the cost should be covered, just like glasses are.
