Even though that is a stipulation to my probation, the judicial system does not assist you in any fashion. It seems that after your debt is paid be it monetarily or in time spent, the parole officers only want to push you aside and hope that you will abide by the rules. If society does not assist in any way to aid in employment issues, what alternative is there Fortunately, I am blessed with a loving and caring family. Thank God is all I can say. Some of the people I met in the system were not as fortunate as myself. Why can't we help them Thank you for noticing that our society is going nowhere as far as rehabilitation. Thank you for caring.Flag

He was released from prison, couldn't get a job that was enough to support our five children, became desparate about it and went back to selling drugs. He recently was arrested again and will now be incarcerated for a long time. It's a no win situation for convicted felons. I hope and pray something changes.Flag

He has been trying to go to truckdriving school but doors have been closed because of his felony 5 yrs ago.One stop centers would not help either. There are reasons our black men turn back to crime, but thank God my husband has faith and love for his family and will not give up and I won't give up on him.Flag

Name: Lillian Cunningham on Apr 18, 2004State: FLCountry: USComments: Our system is broken. Almost to the point of repair. Not only the after effects of being in prison, but the fact that the system is unfair in the sentencing of the people that have been sentenced to a Mandatory system in this state. The prison system it's self is a horrible dream to the many inmates. Failure to provide schooling, Food that is eatible, medical attention, phone calls that cost us the people, tax payers much more than it should, the abuse of the guards that s allowed while they are behind razor wire, the cost of things in the canteen and visiting parks. There are so many things wrong with the judicial system in the state of Florida that one would have to write a book on the manner in which an inmate reaches this situation of being put in prison. Youthful offenders is held against each person when they are arrested that they have already paid their time and price for once and they have to pay again. It doesn't matter how long ago things have happened. The prosecuter and an appointed attorney is paid by the tax payer's. How can anyone get a fair trial under this system. Please sign this petition to make all the changes in the system, so that this will cease in this state. People are afraid of prisoners being released from prison and hiring an ex-con. Please be aware of the way things are in this system now with nothing being done to help change the system that when prisoner's are released that actually had no rehabilitation inside that life on the outside is going to be hard and could affect all of our lives. Prison in the state of Florida has become a bussiness. A warehousing of people that do not belong in prison to just have money made off of them for the state. We the people of our loved inmates wish to have a system that is fair. They are human beings and deserve a chance to make a new life when they are released. Someone in prison that has been very faithful to the system and earned respect by doing the work that they want them to do and has done it with more than satisfactory reports should be able to gain time even if it was a mandatory system. Judge's that over sentence someone to be later kicked of the bench for his bad ethics and admits to taking medication or drugs that caused him to be this way, should have the cases of this Judge looked into and perhaps it would be found to have a person grudge against anyone that comes before the court. Remember that we the people have elected these people that make these laws to mistreat and warehouse people in the prison system. We can and we must make changes. We can move a mountain in numbers. It is hard for one person alone to get something done. I for one will never give in. i will keep on trying to change the system.Flag

Name: PAMELA BUCK on Jul 9, 2004State: WACountry: USComments: SORRY, MY COMMENTS ARE SO LONG, BUT I HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THIS. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS WHY MY HUSBAND IS BACK SERVING TIME IN PRISON AGAIN. HE DID GET REHABILATATED, BUT HIS PREVIOUS FELONY, THAT HE GOT 15 YRS AGO STILL HAUNTS HIM. HE WAS A 17 YR OLD BOY, WHEN HE MADE THE MISTAKE OF BEING W/ THE WRONG CROWD, AND IN THE WRONG PLACE. FOR A SMALL AMOUNT OF COCAINE, HE HAS PAID A DEAR PRICE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. RIGHT NOW IT IS COSTING HIM HIS FAMILY (TWO BEAUTIFUL, 20 MONTH OLD TWINS, THAT AS WELL, ARE NOW SERVING TIME RIGHT ALONGSIDE HIM. IT IS COSTING HIM THE $65,000 A YR JOB HE HAS HELD FOR THE LAST 5YRS., WHICH HAS PLUNGED US BACK INTO A LIFE OF POVERITY, AS A FAMILY. OUR STORY IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT, AS TO WHY HE IS BACK IN THE SYSTEM. HE CAME FROM MEXICO WHEN HE WAS 15. OUR INS LAWS STATE THAT ANYTIME A ALIEN GETS AN AGGRAVATED FELONY, THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO BE STRIPPED OF THEIR RIGHT TO BE HERE IN THIS COUNTRY. HE WAS LUCKY AT THE TIME, AND SOMEHOW FELL THROUGH THE SYSTEM, AND HAS REMAINED HERE IN THE COUNTRY, REBUILDING HIS LIFE UPWARD WITH A GOOD JOB, EDUCATING HIMSELF W/ THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE(SPEECH, READING, WRITING), AND BEING A WONDERFUL FATHER TO HIS CHILDREN. HE HAS REMAINED HERE ALL THESE YEARS, WITH NO PROBLEMS, WITH THE LAW. AS HE THOUGHT HE WAS OK TO BE HERE, WE RETURNED TO MEXICO EARLIER THIS YEAR TO VISIT FAMILY, THAT HE HASN'T SEEN IN SO MANY YEARS. UPON OUR RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES, HIS FINGERPRINTS WERE RAN, AND HIS ORIGINAL FELONY SHOWED UP, AND THE STATEMENT THAT HE HAD BEEN DEPORTED(EVEN THOUGH HE WASN'T)CAME UP. IMAGINE OUR HORROR, AS THEY HAULED DADDY AWAY IN FRONT OF OUR EYES. AT THE TIME, WE WERE IN AZ, AND WE LIVE IN WA STATE. SO THE BABIES, AND I HAD TO GET ON A PLANE TOWARDS HOME, W/O DADDY WITH US. NOT KNOWING HIS FATE, OR OURS, I CRIED ALL THE WAY HOME. THAT WAS 7 MONTHS AGO. THEY CHARGED HIM W/ ILLEGAL RE-ENTRY W/ A PREVIOUS FELONY. THE PREVIOUS FELONY, THOUGH HE HAS TURNED HIS LIFE AROUND, WAS NOW HAUNTING HIM. WE WERE TOLD THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO SERVE TIME, BECAUSE HE HAD THE PREVIOUS FELONY (SOMETHING ABOUT A POINT SYSTEM COUNTING MORE AGAINST HIM). THEY TALKED HIM INTO A PLEA BARGAIN OF 36 MONTHS, AND THEN DEPORTATION BACK TO MEXICO. HE SIGNED THE PLEA, AS HE WAS FEARFUL OF DOING MORE TIME AGAIN(NORMAL SENTENCING 59-71MONTHS), AND NEVER SEEING HIS FAMILY AGAIN. IF HE HAD NOT HAD THE PREVIOUS FELONY ON HIS RECORD, HE WOULD HAVE ONLY DID ABOUT 3 MONTHS TIME. HE HAS MEN ALONGSIDE HIM, THAT HAVE DONE FAR WORSE CRIMES, (DRUGS,HUMAN SMUGGLING, ETC..) THAT ARE SERVING LESS TIME THAN HIM. I HAVE WATCHED THIS ONCE, SMILING, VIBRANT, HAPPY MAN, BECOME SO DEPRESSED, UNHAPPY, AND NON TRUSTING OF ANYONE (INCLUDING MYSELF). HE TELLS ME IT IS, BECAUSE OF PRISON LIFE, THAT IT DOES THAT TO YOU. THIS TEARS ME UP, TO SEE HIM BECOME THIS WAY, AS I KNOW HIM DIFFERENTLY. I FEEL LIKE I AM FIGHTING A BATTLE, TO HOLD ONTO THE MAN I REALLY KNOW. HE TELLS ME, HE HAS NOTHING TO DO INSIDE WHERE HE IS AT, BUT READ, WATCH TV, SLEEP, AND EAT. HE NEEDS TO WORK, GO TO SCHOOL, SOMETHING, SO HIS MIND, AND THOSE CONCRETE WALLS DON'T CONSUME HIM TO THE POINT, WE NEVER GET HIM FULLY BACK. HIS BABIES, AND I ARE SERVING TIME ALSO, AS WE HAVE BEEN PLUNGED INTO FINANCIAL POVERTY (I AM DISABLED, AND ON SS DISABILITY BENEFITS FROM WHEN I DID WORK)EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL STRESS. OUR BABIES HAVE NO FATHER FIGURE IN THEIR LIFE (STATISTICS SAY, THIS CAUSES CHILDREN TO BE MORE LIKELY TO GET INTO TROUBLE THEMSELVES WHEN THEY ARE OLDER, EXAMPLE: GIRLS UNWED, PREGNANT, ON THE WELFARE SYSTEM-BOYS INNVOLVED IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES, INCARCERATED THEMSELVES.) HOW CAN WE EVER BREAK THE CYCLE, IF THE SYSTEM IS CAUSING US AS FAMILIES TO BE IN THE CYCLE HOW CAN WE EVER EXPECT THOSE THAT HAVE SERVED TIME, TO HAVE A DIFFERENT OUTLOOK ON LIFE, IF THEY ARE ALREADY DOOMED BY THEIR PAST MISTAKES YOUR DAMNED IF YOU DO, DAMNED IF YOU DON'T. IF THEY HAVE SERVED THEIR TIME, PROVED THEIR REHABILITATION, THEN LET THEIR SLATES BE CLEAN. WE ALL ARE HUMAN, AND HAVE MADE MISTAKES IN OUR LIVES. LOOK AT A LOT OF THE HIGHER UPS (POLITICAL) THAT HAVE DONE FAR WORSE CRIMES TO THIS COUNTRY, BUT YOU DON'T SEE THEM DOING TIME, OR PROSECUTED FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. NO, THEY ARE THE ONES THAT ARE ENFORCING THE LAWS, FOR OUR LOVED ONES BEHIND BARS. AS FAR AS MY STORY, THE CHILDREN, AND I WILL BE FORCED OUT OF THIS COUNTRY, IF WE WANT TO EVER HAVE A LIFE WITH THEIR FATHER. WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR RIGHTS, AS US CITIZENS THEY WERE STRIPPED, RIGHT ALONGSIDE HIM. THIS COUNTRY TALKS ABOUT ALL THE POVERTY, AND BROKEN HOMES, THAT OUR CHILDREN ARE BEING RAISED IN, BUT THE SYSTEM ITSELF, HAS CAUSED A LOT OF ITS OWN GRIEF. THANK YOU FOR HEARING ME OUT. AGAIN, I AM SORRY FOR THE LENGTH OF THIS, BUT THE SUBJECT REALLY ANGERS ME, AND THE SYSTEM WON'T LISTEN TO ME, AND MANY OTHER FAMILIES OUT THERE THAT ARE SUFFERING, BECAUSE OF THEM.Flag

In Wisconsin, the only ex-felons that lose their rights to vote are those who were found guilty of treason or voting fraud. I think that is a position all states should adopt, but it would have to be driven from the voting populations of their own home states.Flag

Im hitting road block after road block trying to get a job or even what i can and cant be as far as a career. i get so frustrated and depressed i can not seem to get a break or a chance. i still dont have my restitution payed off so im not allowed to register my car. so i get ticket after ticket and cant pay them off because i cant find a job. im in school for a paralegal program and people keep telling me to change my career. i wanted into criminal justice so i could try to help people but i was told all i would get was education.some people do deserve a second chance.Flag
