The petition
This petition is being presented on behalf of all those courageous human beings
who need 3-4 hour life-saving dialysis treatments every other day or more often to stay
alive. They deserve to live each day in dignity, treated with loving
kindness and freedom from additional needless suffering.
All dialysis patients who become patients of hospitals which are not already dialysis equipped are transported by
ambulance to other hospitals to receive life saving dialysis. They also suffer from other
life-threatening illnesses and are often hanging on to life by a thread. Our
fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, children and friends also have
cancer, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, dialysis line
infection, uncontrolled bleeding, recent limb amputations and have
undergone many other serious medical procedures and emergencies. Their home hospitals without dialysis treatment facilities and off hospital grounds dialysis satellite clinics will not accept them once they are hospitalized. As a result they need to be transferred to properly equipped hospitals. The compassion and skill of
the Paramedics and all other Ambulance Personnel is not the issue. The
issue is the needless ordeal and additional human suffering, medical and
transportation risk that this process causes to some of the most
vulnerable people who are too sick to speak and advocate for themselves.
This cruel practice is being done as a cost saving measure.
We who are their relatives and friends have already spoken out countless times and
there have been petitions advocating change to try to save their lives and
ease their pain. The hospital administrators, the MP's, the Minister of
Health, and the Premier have all said that it is not in their jurisdiction
to correct this injustice. They have said that it is not in their power to
control the allocation of funds to remedy the situation and it is not
their decision to make. They are right. They have spoken the truth. It is
not their decision to make. It is your decision as the public and
taxpayers to say how your health dollars are spent. I urge you to make
your voice heard. One dialysis machine may cost as much as $ 30,000
dollars. There are portable machines already being used in many hospitals that can be transferred to and used in individual ICU
rooms for people who are too sick to be moved. The Dialysis trained nurses
are already working at existing dialysis clinics, many of which are not on hospital grounds and will not accept their own patients after they are hospitalized. The kidney specialists
are already working for the dialysis clinics and hospitals.
There are so many things in our lives that we can't control. But we do
have free will. We each have a voice. We can choose to remain silent or to
speak. We can choose to do nothing or to act to try to save a life or to
ease the pain of another human being. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that out lives begin to end the moment we remain silent about something that matters.
One voice, one letter, one phone call, e-mail, one fax is like a candle in
the wind. Yes it can be blown out by a single gust of wind. But the voice
of many can be as numerous as the stars in the sky. They can't be
silenced. They will be heard and will eventually result in change for the better for the advancement of human rights. If
not today, then the next day or tomorrow. But it is certain that our voices united fighting to correct an injustice will
be heard, and positive change will result.
I urge you to make your voice heard. Contact your hospital administrators,
your MP's, the Minister of Health and all the people who you have put in
power over the lives of your loved ones. It is much more than an issue of
money. It is an act of love to try to save a life and ease the suffering
of another human being. There is nothing that matters more in the world.
We the undersigned petition the Minister of Health and the Canadian Federal Government to provide in each hospital in Canada emergency kidney dialysis in the intensive care units.
