Did you know that in the state of Connecticut 2013, there are NO Mandatory laws upholding the patients rights to Informed Consent regarding chemotherapy? I am a Registered nurse who underwent cytotoxic treatment for 3rd stage breast cancer. After 3 years, I developed side effects that resulted in memory loss, numbness to me feet and hands, and in addition, an arachnoid cyst to the right side of my frontal lobe in my brain. My oncologist DID NOT give me the longterm side effects that led to my researching each drug that I received in 2009. Information that I NEEDED to know. Nor did he explain the ontoward effects that would lay dormant until years later. When I asked for my medical records to view where I signed the Informed Consent, he said: "we dont do that here". I was shocked! As an RN, my job has been to inform patients of their medications; including what to expect from its side effects. Patients NEED to know prior to having any drug that has a potential to cause alarming side effects, including death. This is done so that patients can make a well-informed decision regarding the quality of their lives and make this final choice. Im reaching out to those who DID NOT recieve this valuable information from their oncologist, and there are many, and suffer today from not having this important conversation with those they trusted to heal, not harm. Without a second guess, this needs to change for all cancer victims. Today, at age 49, I suffer with osteoporosis and severe memory loss (as a result of Lupron injections to decrease estrogen in my body), gastrointestinal problems, nodules to my rt lung, and 3 spots on my liver which have doubled in size in 3 years (another condition left out of the client/doctor repetoire). I urge you to support this petition to allow our state to vindicate a law that makes Informed Consent mandatory across the board for patients diagnosed with Cancer. Dont let a multibillion dollar industry get away with elusive information; demand the truth, you owe it to yourself and to those you love.
