“We have already felt for ourselves the consequences of environmental damage, such as landslides, floods, forest fires and so on. We must encourage a form of development that is environmentally friendly.” (Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, president, Republic of Indonesia) Dear General Timur Pradopo, I am glad that the recent case against Governor Aceh Irwandi Yusuf and PT Kalista Alam regarding illegal issuing of a palm oil permit has resulted in the permit being revoked by the new Governor of Aceh. However, this court case should not be seen as a resolution of the problems of illegal activities regarding permits for logging and agricultural activities in Aceh. Illegal forest clearing using fire continues in Tripa, and many companies are involved. These crimes must not go unpunished. Please ensure that these matters are investigated and dealt with immediately, as irreversible destruction of our precious natural resources is ongoing. As a nation we must live up to our national laws and international commitments. ---------------- Yours respectfully, [Your name]
