When most people hear of the shootings and violence that have occurred recently, their thoughts jump to gun control. Although gun control is extremely necessary, it is not the only factor that Americans need to take into mind. Mental Health needs to be focused on just as much as gun control. Gun-advocates often state that "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." This, on a certain level, is true. A gun is an inanimate object. It cannot kill or harm anyone without a human being enabling it. That is why Americans need to be educated on mental health and gun control.

From a young age, most American children learnt that hurting people is a bad thing. That guns are either bad or that they need to be used responsibly. Although hearing this from parents and teachers is a good start, it is not good enough. We need teachers. We need classes. We need awareness. Our teachers need to be educated in mental health. It is not good enough to have counselors in schools. The educators need to have a more hands on effect. Classes need to be taught, and information needs to be given. Funding needs to given to the schools, and researchers. We cannot expect a change in society if we do not have to proper education.
If there was more attention paid to Mental Health in America, perhaps we would have less gun violence and instability.
