BACKGROUND

A developer has proposed building a gasification incinerator on the banks of the Catawba River in western Mecklenburg County that will burn our garbage for the next twenty years.

The developer has no previous experience in this field and the two incinerator units will be built and operated by a company that has never built and operated a commercial gasification incinerator.
Incinerators emit toxic and hazardous emissions that contain cancer causing agents and other pollutants that will further compromise our air quality.

The project and the plan have been approved without public input and without a thorough review and analysis of the safety, public health, environmental and economic impact on Mecklenburg County.

THE PETITION

Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners,

I am very concerned about the proposed ReVenture gasification incinerator and the plan to burn our garbage for the next twenty years and I request that you convene a series of public hearings on this plan to allow citizens input into the matter.

The developer has no previous experience in this field and the two incinerator units will be built and operated by a company that has never built and operated a commercial gasification incinerator. I believe that you have endorsed the wrong company and technology.

Incinerators emit toxic and hazardous emissions that contain cancer causing agents and other pollutants that will further compromise our health and air quality. The NC Academy of Family Physicians and other medical organizations have noted that biomass incinerators create emissions of particulate matter, NOXs, SOXs, arsenic, mercury, cancer causing dioxins and other compounds that research has shown to increase the risk of premature death, asthma, chronic bronchitis, heart disease and other disease states. Given the large number of neighborhoods, schools and environmental sensitive water and lands, I believe that you have endorsed the wrong location.

The project and the plan has been approved without public input and without a through review and analysis of the safety, public health, environmental and economic impact on Mecklenburg County. I believe that you have selected and endorsed the wrong to solution to our waste management problems.

I therefore request that you convene a series of public hearings on this plan to allow citizens input into the matter as soon as possible.

Thank you.
