Comments: My nephew was sent to PRISON for breaking out some windows and stealing cigarettes. He has been sexually assaulted, beaten up on a daily basis and who knows what else...I feel I can't help him. This is his first offense and he got the maximum. Good luck!

Comments: I WORK IN A STATE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT FACILITY OF YOUTH OFFENDER. I'M SORRY BUT THEY GET SHUFFLED AROUND, MEDICATED AND SHUFFLED OFF TO NO ONE CARES WHERE. THE SO CALLED TREATMENT PLANS ARE OKAY ON PAPER BUT THE ACTUAL KID IS REALLY GETTING NO HELP AT ALL.

Comments: In today's society, kids are not even allowed to make mistakes without being jailed or suspended from school. In some schools, they are actually JAILING kids for a day if they don't wear the correct socks with their uniform! In other areas, they are arresting kids who are innocent bystanders in the area where a crime was committed... because the kids havew tattoos, or are of a different race, etc. One of my own children was arrested for carrying his PRESCRIPTION medication -- because the officers didn't believe it was his! $12,000.00 later, we still haven't resolved the issue. There is NO DOUBT that our "justice" system is NOT working properly, for our kids or adults. PLEASE sign this petition! Please CREATE MORE PETITIONS LIKE THIS ONE for your area of the country, and keep doing it until our lawmakers LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE! Thank you for working to make a difference!

Comments: I lost my nephew while he was incarcerated in a youth detention unit. I believe very strongly that youths need prevention programs; not just throwing them into undermanned, overworked and ineffective detention centers. How are we supposed to help our children become responsible adults when undermanned systems are forced to put the kids in lock down for days at a time because of a staff shortage, they aren't getting an education and are not receiving services that will aid them when they return to society.

Comments: We need to move away from a retributive criminal justice system and away from mandatory sentances; and shift toward restorative justice models; alternative sentencing; and allow judges to be have the flexibilty to judge cases on a case by case basis.

Comments: I think that the courts need to think about how they are takeing care of the problem.By puting the kids in jail is only giving them a reason to act out more b/c the bad behavior does not stop when they are in there. They would try to be tough so they can not get hurt from other kids that tend to act or be tough. For stealing glue is not a good reason at all to puting them away

Comments: My 15 yr old son has been incarcerated for almost 1yr on an original misdemeanor charge. He has been sent to 2 different placement facilities and has been kicked out of each. He was diagnosed with bipolar, anger aggresion, manic depression to name a few. No one has taken the time to give the correct medicine for this. Medicine is not the cure all we know however, it would probably help and the court appointed attorney in this case is horrible and is not giving any defense. We love and care for our son greatly and are willing to get him the medical help he so desperately needs and the system would rather keep him locked up. We have another court date 1-10-08 for yet another placement determination.
