Petition in the interest of maintaining Intersession as an Important Part of the IMSA experience
Goal
With the renovations required for the IMSA halls that have been announced for the Summer of 2014, this petition has been written in an attempt to prevent the exclusion of Intersession from the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 academic years. Many people will attest to the fact that Intersession has become a crucial part of the IMSA experience, and part of the year where IMSA students are reminded that IMSA is a truly amazing academy.Rationale
Intersession serves a different purpose for every student that has and will attend IMSA. For the FRC (First Robotics Competition) team, Intersession provides a truly unique time that only IMSA offers to design and build a robot for the competition. Without this time, there is a high possibility that the great amount of success that the Robotics Team has experienced over the last couple of years would never again be attainable. Another academic team that takes advantage of this opportunity is the Scholastic Bowl Team which works with its team members to prepare for the heated competition presented at the IHSA State competition, and it has paid off for many years.For many IMSA students that have become endeared to a foreign language would lose this wonderful opportunity to travel to the country which many IMSA students hope to adventure to. Intersession is used by the Spanish teachers as an opportunity to take a group of students to Spain. The French department uses Intersession as an opportunity to teach the French culture in preparation for the French trip later in the year. The Mandarin department takes this opportunity to spread the Chinese culture, and it works perfectly as Intersession being directly after winter break means that Chinese New Year is just around the corner.
Some academic departments use it as a time to help students that may have not done so well in a class. For instance the Mathematics and Science departments both offered classes that were required for students that did not receive an appropriate grade in a class. This allows IMSA to maintain a high standard of learning, and ensure that all of their students finish a class with the best possible understanding of a specific subject.
For many IMSA students though, it gives them an opportunity that can not be matched by any other school. Some students take the time to learn about a passion such as debating or nuclear physics. Others take the opportunity to develop skills in areas that will benefit them later in life, such as entrepreneurship or starting a business from scratch. Others take it as an opportunity to learn about a specific portion of history that interests them, such as spending a week studying World War Two or the Renaissance. Some students take other Intercessions like the music composition Intersession to explore on enhance their knowledge in a field that is normally avoided during the school year.
Finally, some students take Intersession as an opportunity to relax and hang out with friends. Intersessions that take students scuba diving, or the Doctor Who Intersession provided this past year. Some take it as an opportunity to create chainmail jewelry. For all IMSA students, past and present, Intersession provides a tremendous way to kick off the Second Semester while also providing an opportunity to learn and explore a plethora of ideas and concepts that most schools wouldn’t consider teaching as they aren’t historically parts of a school's curriculum.
