Name: Anonymous on May 7, 2006State: ILCountry: USComments: I think it is kind of ridiculous to have the Interstate speed limit 65 in IL when all surrounding states (IA, MO, WI, MI, IN) are 70. I drive for my work and have been all over the US. Many of the western states are 75. Many people in IL do not obey the speed limits. People can drive safely at 70-80 on the instate.Flag

Name: Brian Jakosz on Jul 9, 2006State: ILCountry: USComments: Yes, The limits should be 65 in the city and 75 or 80 in the country!! The majority of traffic is going 80 mph in the country already, with the artificially low 65 limit in place. This is very dangerous, when somebody enters the highway at 65 mph and cuts in front of everybody else already doing 80. Many people get killed this way. Higher limits would results in less traffic deaths each year!Flag

We drive an 18-wheeler and there has NEVER been one time when driving through Illinois that ANY ONE is going 55, even though we are. Raise the speed limit to 60 for trucks over 13 ton, like most other states have.Flag

Name: Bart Dude on May 30, 2007State: ILCountry: USComments: Driving 300 miles from Chicago to St. Louis is the most dangerous part of my 2000mile trip to CA because going 55mph on the interstate just puts me right to sleep, it is very hard to keep from falling asleep at that boring speed, in my opinion it is unsafe to be going this slow and the only reason for the ridiculous speed limit is that it generates excellent revenue for the state. (just like CA)Flag

Name: Dale Spann on Jul 11, 2007State: MICountry: USComments: I lived in IL for a majority of my life within an hour of Chicago. The speed limits in IL are ridiculous and a joke. It might say 55 in the burbs of Chicago but even at 70-75 you'll get run off the road. As far as RURAL speed limits that's an absolute joke especially since 2/3 of IL you can see EVERYTHING within 20-30 miles and a majority of the state has NO TREES! You also forgot that LA has MUCH WORSE traffic and is posted 65 in most of the city and all of the suburbs. In southern IL on 57 I had my cruise in the lower 80's and the weekend traffic going from St. Louis to KY Lake or someplace that direction was passing me doing 90. I'd say from living in MI where the speed limit is 70 through our most congested commercial areas and Detroit that at LEAST you should have 55 in Chicago (some parts aren't even that), 65 in suburbs where you can see a steady stream of houses and office buildings and factories. A prime example would be the diffference between 294 from 80 up to about Half Day Road should be 65 after that going north should be 70, the same with 90 the last time I drove it which should be 70 probably west of about Barrington. Have a home rule where cities that are bigger than 50k people can set their own limits like Elgin, Waukegan, and Joliet where it might be appropriate to temporarily go to 65 for a few miles. Beyond that for the rest of the state which is RURAL I'd say that any county over 100,000 people should have to keep a maximum of 70 cars and 65 trucks which would include most counties near Chicago and Rockford and a few in Central IL and near St. Louis. I would also say that even 2 lane roads (I guess 4 lanes are 65 now) should be signed at LEAST 60 and probably 65 in rural areas (if you've driven west of Chicago in the farm areas if you're not going at LEAST 65-70 they'll run you off the road). In smaller counties under 100,000 I'd allow them the option by voter approval to raise all of those limits posted above by 5 meaning 75 freeway, 70 on 4 lane roads, and probably 65 on 2 lane roads. The only thing besides the economy I hate about MI is that the 2 lane roads are 55 MPH here and a lot of the 4 lane ones are too, that could be raised, but I can go 70 legally through Detroit meaning 80-85 depending upon the cop's mood, quota, weather, etc. I thought you all were supposed to GET RID OF THE TOLL ROADS and not increase them, the Toll Authority hasn't kept books since 1974 and the toll roads are supposed to be paid off when the bonds are up. When I lived there they were seriously talking about removing the toll booths I think you guys over there need to worry about your road $ more than speed limit there, you have the HIGHEST GAS TAXES in the country and roads as bad as ours in MI I think you all need a motoring revolt over there, if you elect Blagojevich you got what you deserved, crap, and hot air and the 10 foot pole going you know where! Name: Fred McKinney on Jul 23, 2007State: MOCountry: USComments: Illinois legislators, what's wrong with you guys SURELY you guys drive the roads to and from Springfield on occasion and know DAMN WELL how PATHETICALLY SLOW the posted 65 MPH speed limit is! Now I could understand that in mountainous territory in the northeastern U.S., but in a state where you can see for MILES!! Come on, Illinois legislators, WAKE UP and get your heads out of your butts and get with the program like most of the states surrounding you have done! Here in Missouri, we were the first state surrounding Illinois to go to 70 MPH on rural interstates back in early 1996. It took a while for other states surrounding Illinois to do so, but Iowa and Indiana both did in 2005, and then Kentucky finally went back to 70 earlier this year. BUT WHY HASN'T ILLINOIS!! Illinois is so nice and smooth and flat that there is NO REASON WHATSOEVER in my mind to, if nothing else, at least raise the rural interstates to at least 70, truck limits to 65 if you insist on continuing to have them, and rural 2-lanes to 60. There is NO REASON AT ALL FOR ANYTHING LESS THAN THIS. Ideally, I'd like to see 75 on rural interstates, a truck speed limit of 65 or 70, 65 or possibly 70 on rural 4-lanes, and 65 whenever possible on both urban interstates and rural 2-lanes. This idea of 65 on rural interstates when it's relatively flat is a JOKE and is nothing but a CASH COW for the cops. Sheeesh!! Fred in St. LouisFlag

Name: Brother Day on Jul 28, 2007State: ILCountry:Comments: Please raise the speed limit to 70 or 75 mph on rural interstate, driving from Peoria all the way to the southern tip is quite a hike! IL has some great, smooth and flat straight roads. I feel that 75 mph would be ideal. Many people are at least going 75-80 which is prudent for the highways and actually 75 seems slow after a while but having the higher speed limit would allow people to drive with more comfort especially on the long stretches! If you guys actually had to drive every day long distances, I don't beleive you would be so happy about the stupid 65 mph limitFlag

In the rural areas or traveling to other states were the condition are safe then their should be no speed limits. Just as long driver can stay focused on driving and not talking on their phones , eating ,reading, putting on make up, or acting like there car is a formula one, or nascar vehicle.Flag
