How are the children going to reach their full potenial if class sizes continue to increase Schools are laying teachers off and having larger class sizes. Also, money that is being reimbursted for private schooling is taking away from public education. Parents who choose private education have made a choice and should pay for it.Flag

There should be no rich districts and no poor districts and it is a shame that the Governor and our legislators have done so little on this issue to allow so many school districts face growing deficits year after yearFlag

Partial or complete funding through income tax instead of property tax would also be more equitable.Flag

He has an agenda for taking over the entire public education system, and that is where his attention will lie. Let's get the legislators to move, so the gov will gladly follow!Flag

Name: Orrin Merritt on Apr 5, 2004State: ILComments: Authorize county govenment to establish a sales tax which would go directly to the county education fund to be divided equally to each child's school. The total collect from the county in one year would decrease the property tax for each property owner equally. Adjustment of the percentage of assessment would reduce the tax rate in porportion to the poperty owned. Keep the middle man out of the picture. Use only existing administrations to oversee the money. Do not create another layer of administrators which uses the much needed money for schools. Education increase the quality of life for everyone. Compared to the increase some counties wish to get to build more jails. Prevention of problems is more cost effective than clean up.Flag

Name: Laurie Powell-Fuller on Apr 5, 2004State: ILComments: I have been teaching at-risk students since 1978. My class number has always been approximately 20 students. THis year I have 25, with probably more than that next year. The 20 in a class was extremely challenging. Words cannot express how difficult it is to try to reach and teach 25 kids with the problems my students have. This is compounded by the fact that many of our support services have been cut in the past 2 years, and many more are scheduled to be cut.Flag

Name: Mary Thompson on Apr 5, 2004State: ILComments: School funding in Illinois is broken and our 2.2 million schoolchildren need your help. In January, Education Week gave Illinois an F for school funding fairness because of the huge disparity between rich and poor districts. Illinois was the only state to receive a failing grade, and this wasn't the first time. This was the fourth year our state received an F. However, in your State of the State address and in your Budget Address you made it clear that education is important to you. This year most Illinois schools faced fewer teachers, at-risk programs, sports, foreign languages, arts and music to name a few. Class sizes are larger and parents are coping with higher school fees. It is my understanding that other states provide almost half of school funding while Illinois' share is just 37 percent - and that's up only 4 percentage points from ten years ago. I do understand that the federal government portion of funding comes to approximately 10 percent; but that leaves Illinois communities having to provide the balance of the education funding – a whopping 53 percent. This funding doesn’t even address the No Child Left Behind Act, which has put added burdens on Illinois schools with a program which is underfunded by about 80 percent. Instead, you and the General Assembly expect local property taxpayers to carry the unfair burden, while Illinois school children are falling behind because programs are cut due to a lack of funding. As homeowners, we need property tax relief—but most importantly, as community members we need adequate funding for our schools. Illinois is not meeting its constitutional responsibility as the primary funding source for public education. Governor, your statement about not addressing a major overhaul of the state's school funding until lawmakers approve your plan to take over the State Board of Education is a wrong approach. To me that sounds like hard-ball politics. The future and education of our children is at stake; the future of an overtaxed public is at stake; and the future of our state is at stake. Aren't these more important issues than rearranging a bureaucracy Decades of talk have not fixed the problem of education funding in Illinois. I realize there are many solutions and countless groups to advocate change however no substantive, long term solution is or will be viable unless you and the General Assembly makes public education a priority.Flag
