Children from low-income households are at a greater risk of obesity than those from higher income households. It is estimated that 87% of Chicago Public School ("CPS") children is made up of low-income households. One out of every four children is obese. And, although nutrition and diet can make a big impact, physical activity is essential to effectively combat this epidemic. iCycle is a community-based program that seeks to accomplish two main goals: first, increase physical activity by making bicycles accessible to low-income CPS children; and second, provide sheltered opportunities for them to ride and learn about bicycle safety. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, children and teenagers need 60 minutes of active and vigorous play everyday to grow to a healthy weight, but only about one-third of students get the recommended levels of physical activity. As a consequence, childhood obesity has more then tripled in the last three decades. And, unfortunately, this epidemic has deeply affected CPS children. iCycle is a program designed to address this problem at the local level. The program mobilizes community leaders and volunteers, parents, and cycling enthusiasts to help children lead a more active lifestyle. More importantly, this program targets children and is especially designed to be make exercising fun and rewarding for them. It focuses on three main goals: 1) Making bicycles accessible to low-income children; 2) Creating sheltered opportunities to ride and to learn about bicycle safety; and 3) Increasing physical activity through fun and competitive exercises. Please support iCycle. WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, CALL ON THE ILLINOIS LEGISLATURE TO TAKE ACTION AND TO SUPPORT AN AMENDMENT TO THE ILLINOIS PLUMBING LICENSE LAW, 225 ILCS 320, TO EXPAND THE DEFINITION OF PLUMBING TO INCLUDE RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEMS.
